9-Year-Old Boy Who Attended Travis Scott's Astroworld Is In A Coma After Being Trampled By Crowd

The stampede caused swelling in 9-year-old Ezra Blount's brain and ended up damaging all of his organs. By Monday his brain swelling got "progressively worse."

Friday's Astroworld music festival took a distressing turn at around 9:30 p.m. as the crowd began surging towards the front of the stage, in turn, compressing hundreds and fatally injuring at least 8. More than 300 people had to be treated for their wounds following the chaotic end of the concert, including a 9-year-old boy who is currently in a medically-induced coma. Ezra Blount, who is the youngest victim of the Astroworld Festival crowd surge, is left fighting for his life at Texas Children's Hospital. According to ABC 13 Houston, the young boy was sitting on his father Treston's shoulders when the crowd went wild and began pushing their way towards the stage.

Eventually, Treston passed out from the pressure of the crowd and Ezra fell from his shoulders and ended up being trampled. When the father finally regained consciousness, his son had already been transported to the hospital. "He was listed as a John Doe because nobody knew his name and the father was still at the venue in the medical facilities," revealed Ezra's grandfather, Bernon Blount. The stampede caused swelling in his brain and ended up damaging all of his organs, the family was told. By Monday his brain swelling got "progressively worse." Speaking to Houston Chronicle, the family said that doctors believe the young boy went into a cardiac arrest.

It’s horrific," said Ezra's grandmother Tericia, who is a nurse, according to Rolling Stones. "We’re just hanging in there, trying to stay strong. He has injuries to his kidney, to his lung, to his liver. Basically, every organ has damage. He had cardiac arrest. His heart is weak and has damage as well. And his brain has swelling, and he’s in an induced coma. They’re just trying to keep him comfortable and trying to figure out a plan for him. They tried to take him off the medications that were paralyzing him, to keep him still, and they had to put him back on. We’re just at that place right now, just hoping for the best in spite of all the negative information."

It was supposed to be a bonding moment for Treston and the 9-year-old boy who lives in Dallas with his mother. Ezra's father had traveled from Tyler in order to spend some quality time with his son unaware of the distressing future that awaited them. Just like the heartbroken families of the deceased, Ezra's loved ones too are looking for answers explaining how such devastating chaos was even allowed to unfold during such a big event. "I guess my biggest thing is, how could this happen in the city of Houston? You know, when we go to concerts and different events, we expect safety and security. And all the videos I've seen, I didn't see any security. I saw very little security," said grandfather Bernon Blount.

"I just think there should be some accountability, cause for my grandson to end up the way he did, something terrible happened. He's a small, innocent child, he didn't deserve that. He didn't deserve it at all," he added. "He's just coming into town to see one of his favorite artists, and to be trampled like that, and really left in the hospital with no one knowing where he was, that's heartbreaking. As the citizens of Houston, we don't deserve it, and my grandson certainly didn't deserve it." Tericia expressed, "Why couldn’t this have been prevented? I’m just angry and sad and upset. Why didn’t Travis Scott stop? Wasn’t he watching the ambulances and people performing CPR? Doesn’t he care about the city of Houston? The mayor gave him the key. This is the city he’s from. Why wasn’t he looking out for the people?"

The concert ended up claiming 8 lives, including Jacob Jurinek, 21; John Hilgert, 14; Brianna Rodriguez, 16; Franco Patiño, 21; Axel Acosta, 21; Rudy Peña, 23; Madison Dubiski, 23; and Danish Baig, 27. The crowd went wild and kept pushing towards the stage and this pressure ended up suffocating many who found themselves in and out of consciousness during that time. Even as an ambulance made its way towards the crowd to provide medical assistance, the attendees continued dancing on and blocking as seen in a video. According to The New York Times, some clips appeared to show a person climbing a camera operator's platform and pleading for him to stop as people were dying. However, others can be heard downplaying his concerns and asking him to "calm down" instead."

Meanwhile, Travis Scott expressed that he was "absolutely devastated" by the events that unfolded on Friday. On Monday, he announced that he would pay to cover the funeral expenses of the fans who died. He also met with Houston Police Department Chief Troy Finner, who revealed that their investigation is underway. "This is now a criminal investigation that’s going to involve our homicide division, as well as narcotics, and we’re going to get down to the bottom of it," he said.
