"He said he didn't want another woman, or another life. Then he shocked me. He said he wanted to give me one of his kidneys."
Tina Turner has revealed that her husband donated a kidney for her kidney transplant.
According to the 78-year-old singer's autobiography, she has had renal illness and by 2016, her kidney function was "20 percent and plunging rapidly," per USA TODAY. She was intially married to Ike Turner whom she met at a nightclub in Manhattan, reports Amomama. Years after she and Ike separated, Turner shared that their marriage had been damaged by verbal and physical violence.
Fortunately, Turner had another opportunity to discover real love—this time with Erwin Bach, a music industry executive. When she first met Bach, she had no intention of getting into another relationship, but he pushed long enough that they ended up creating the most endearing love story. Turner said in a HBO documentary, per Oprah Daily, "He had the prettiest face. You could not miss it. My heart went bu-bum. It means that a soul has met. My hands were shaking. And Roger said to me, 'Tina, you ride with Erwin,' and I wanted to go, 'Yay!'"
After three years of serious dating, Bach chose to propose to her on her 50th birthday, one of her favorite days. However Turner didn't react the way he had anticipated. She instead delivered a vague response as a result of her apprehension about commitment. Despite the doubt, Bach's love for the legendary singer did not wane, and nearly three decades later, she answered yes. The couple was married in 2013, at their exquisitely-furnished Swiss house.
Bach has been unwavering in his presence, staying right by Turner's side, through thick and thin. He supported her through her health problems as well. Turner was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2016. She was given the choice between regular dialysis or a transplant for treatment. Bach then did something amazing—he offered to donate one of his kidneys to her. She recalled, "He said he didn't want another woman, or another life. Then he shocked me. He said he wanted to give me one of his kidneys."
The kidney transplant was successful, and she was appreciative of her husband for giving her the "gift of life." She added that she was "happy, overwhelmed and relieved" to have undergone the ordeal and come out of it safely.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck Turner's life yet again when she lost her first child, Craig Turner. Her son from a previous relationship, Craig, aged 59, had been found dead with self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Turner described it as her "saddest moment." Bach has remained loyal in his love for the singer even during the most trying times, refusing to allow her difficulties or fame come in the way of their relationship.
In 2019, Turner claimed that, even after so many years, her longtime lover continues to sing her praises in his letters. She posted a picture with Bach along with the caption, "Erwin and I have been together for over 30 years, and he still writes me love letters – isn't that romantic?"
