After her 16th birthday, he put a sticky note on his daughter's door saying, "Gyno. Tomorrow. 9:30."
It's not uncommon for parents to want to talk endlessly about their children. But talking about their virginity and their "intact" hymen to the world is definitely a rare topic of conversation.
When rapper and music producer, T.I. decided to open up about parenting on an episode of Ladies Like Us, he ended up putting his daughter's hymen under the spotlight and had no qualms about revealing her personal life to the entire world.
"I think that most kids in hindsight, looking back, they always thank their parents for not allowing them to damage themselves as much as they could have," T.I., whose original name is Clifford Harris, said on the show. This led to a conversation where he and the others on the show started talking about strict parenting and having the "sex talk" with children, as reported by MadameNoire.
When the rapper was asked whether he has had the "talk" with his children, he revealed how he has gone a step further in ensuring that his daughter, Deyjah is still a virgin. 18-year-old Deyjah is the oldest among T.I.'s six children, according to The Sun.
"This is the thing. Deyjah’s 18, just graduated high school now and she’s attending her first year of college, figuring it out for herself," he said. "And yes, not only have we had the conversation, we have yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen."
The hosts, model Nazanin Mandi and makeup artist Nadia Moham, laughed in response, according to NBC News, and one of them said, "Deyjah is a prisoner."
For Deyjah's 16th birthday, T.I. may or may not have written her a birthday card. But one thing he didn't forget was write a reminder for his daughter about her doctor's appointment.
"...I think this might have been after her 16th birthday. This is what we do. Right after the birthday we celebrate," he said. “Usually like the day after the party she’s enjoying her gifts. I put a sticky note on the door: 'Gyno. Tomorrow. 9:30.'"
Recalling the appointments, the rapper shared, "...We’ll go and sit down and the doctor will come and talk and the doctor’s maintaining a high level of professionalism. He’s like, 'You know sir, I have to, in order to share information' — I’m like, 'Deyjah they want you to sign this so we can share information. Is there anything you would not want me to know? See doc? No problem.'"
When the doctor would explain to him that the hymen can be broken in ways other than intercourse, such as "bike riding, athletics, horseback riding and just other forms of athletic physical activity", T.I adds he responded, "Look doc, she don’t ride no horses, she don’t ride no bike, she don’t play no sports. Just check the hymen please and give me back my results expeditiously."
But the rapper didn't stop there with his personal parenting choices, or bother drawing the line when it came to talking about his teenage daughter's personal life. So far, he's been pleased with the results that came whenever he escorted his daughter to the gynecologist, and he declared, "I will say as of her 18th birthday, her hymen is still intact."
After talking about all the work he puts in to keep an eye on his daughter, he said that people would stay away from his daughter, saying virgins are "no fun. Who wants a virgin? Like really? All that work," according to Refinery29.
People who saw his comments did not hold back when they pointed out his out-of-the-ordinary methods. So far, Deyjah has not said anything in connection with her father's revelations, but Metro reported that the 18-year-old liked some tweets that called his comments "disgusting" and "beyond possessive".
Among the many social media users who responded to his views, some tweeted the following.
No exaggeration, T.I. invading the space and humanity of his daughter like this is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever heard. https://t.co/OIWkQgglCn— Frederick Joseph (@FredTJoseph) November 6, 2019
Policing girls and teen's sexuality messes them up when they reach adulthood. This situation is an extreme example of this. When your parent was the first to cross these boundaries, you're already being taught you don't have any sexual agency. This is harmful parenting.— Natelegé Whaley (@natelege_) November 6, 2019
Couldn’t even imagine how Deyjah Harris is feeling right now. T.I. lame for even discussing her virginity on a public platform.— B (@PoloSwervo) November 6, 2019
Beyond being gross and toxic, this behavior is based on the idea that hymens are "freshness" seals.— 5'7" Black Male (@absurdistwords) November 6, 2019
That's not how any of this works. https://t.co/ggeBFe9SuI
