"I felt like I'd been shot," Hurley had said at the time.
Those who lived through the '90s will definitely remember the 'It' couple of the era - Huge Grant and Elizabeth Hurley. Their relationship made headlines for various reasons, both good and bad. The worst, however, was when Grant was caught cheating on Hurley with a sex worker. It seemed like it would end at the time but the couple continued their relationship and had stayed together for 13 years before calling it quits in the year 2000.
Strangely, the couple was praised by the media at the time for staying together. Both were notable actors of their time and the cameras could never get enough of them at red carpets. They were a power duo until their shocking split. Their relationship started in 1987 when Hurley was shooting for her first major film, Remando al Viento (Rowing with the Wind). Grant met her and it was love at first sight. The tabloids were filled with stories of their budding romance. Their 'perfect romance' continued to make headlines throughout the late '80s and early '90s.
This is perhaps why fans were left shocked as news outlets reported of a cheating scandal in 1995. Grant was caught in Hollywood taking part in a "lewd act" with sex worker Divine Brown. Grant would go on to release a statement the day after the scandal saying, "Last night I did something completely insane, I have hurt people I love and embarrassed people I work with. For both things, I am more sorry than I can ever possibly say." Two weeks later, when Hurley made a public appearance, media noted how she 'wasn't smiling as she used to'. "I felt like I'd been shot," Hurley said on 20/20 later that year, reported the Los Angeles Times.
The couple still stayed together until their split in 2000 and have remained friends since. Both gave different reasons for what lead to them parting ways. Grant in an interview with Andy Cohen credited it to lack of sex. "The sex part probably fizzled out but she's my number-one best friend in the world," he said. Hurley on the other hand spoke about how moody Grant was, "He used to really annoy me... My friends used to call him Grumplestiltskin."
It now seems like their friendship worked out a lot better than their relationship did. In September last year Hurley even shared a throwback video of Grant in honor of his 60th birthday. "A belated (because it took me two days to work out how to screen record) Happy 60th Birthday to the glorious Hugh Grant – a magnificent addition to the human race- even though he looks like a monkey. (love) you forever xxxx," Hurley wrote in the caption.
