Jennifer Flavin knew of her partner's history with other women when she started dating him. However, she trusted him.
Some love stories are meant to be. It doesn't matter how many obstacles prevent the union, it always seems to come around. Sylvester Stallone's relationship with his wife, Jennifer Flavin was such a kind. Though Stallone broke up with her in the worst way possible, Flavin welcomed him with open hands once again.
The Rocky star met 19-year-old Flavin after his share of broken relationships. The 42-year-old was undoubtedly at the lowest point in his personal and professional life. But when his eyes met Flavin at a West Hollywood restaurant in 1988, he forgot about the criticism that bothered him.
Soon, the couple started dating and there was nothing like it. Their bond was incredible. “When we come together, it is wonderful. When we are separate, there are no strings attached. That’s the way it is. No strings," recalled the Rambo actor. "I’d come over, and we’d watch a movie, cook dinner, goof around with the dog or walk on the beach,” recalled Jennifer to People.
However, after six years of being together, Flavin was left astonished when Stallone decided to dump her. Instead of seeing her in person, the actor sent her a letter via FedEx. "He sent me a six-page handwritten letter, in pen. It was pretty sloppy," told the 51-year-old to People. It was unexpected and Flavin was heartbroken. “I was disappointed. You can’t just write somebody off in a letter after six years. It’s not like I was going to try to beg him to come back to me or anything. I just wanted to talk," said Flavin, according to People.
Soon after, she learned the real reason behind it. Her agent told her that her long time boyfriend was having an affair with another woman, model-photographer Janice Dickinson. The woman had given birth to a baby girl and the Stallone was reportedly the father.
The news was devastating to Flavin. Though she knew of his extra-marital affair history, she wanted to give him a chance. “Jennifer just always wanted to trust in him no matter what,” said her mother. “She’s the kind of girl who wants to believe in the best in everyone. She said, ‘I know he loves me.’ So it was never an issue," recalled a close friend of Flavin.
Moreover, Flavin was convinced about their relationship after she and Stallone discussed having children. Therefore, she had no reason to disbelieve him. “It hit me like a ton of bricks. I had no idea this was going to happen. We talked about us having children, about when I was going to get pregnant. We were already picking names, marking down names that he liked and I liked," said Flavin to People. She felt humiliated and felt like she was going through every “woman’s worst nightmare.”
Meanwhile, Stallone did not comment on the news. Soon, DNA tests proved he was not the father and the actor moved on with other relationships. However, a year later, Stallone realized Flavin was the one for him. Despite their bitter breakup, Flavin gave him another chance. In 1997, the couple tied the knot and started their journey as a family. "I have had two great things happen to me in the past year: the birth of our beautiful daughter Sophia Rose, and now marriage to Jennifer, who is a great mother and I know will be a wonderful wife," said the star in a statement, according to thenetline.com.
Today, they have been married for more than 22 years with three daughters. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph in 2010, he credited his wife for being a good decision-maker.
He said, "But I’ve never had more fun. I learned that from my wife… It took me 19 years to realize she’s always right. I realized that women have a knack, at least Jennifer, for making incredibly erudite, wise, smart decisions. I always leap without looking," according to Sun.
