Sisters Aged 9 and 4 Crash Family Car While Attempting To Drive To California To 'Swim in The Ocean''

The girls had apparently "snagged the keys to the family car while their parents were sleeping and set out on their own summer adventure"

Two Utah sisters made headlines after they escaped unscathed from a car crash after taking their parents' car to drive to California. The West Valley City Police Department confirmed the incident in a post on their social media accounts and said that the girls were hoping to make it to the beach.

The department noted that the 9-year-old girl was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. The girl and her 4-year-old sister had apparently "snagged the keys to the family car while their parents were sleeping and set out on their own summer adventure" on Wednesday morning. The girls, from West Jordan, had driven for approximately 10 miles from their home and had even managed to get onto a highway and freeway before the collision, the police said. After exiting the freeway, the car hopped a median and slammed head-on into a semi-truck, police added, according to PEOPLE

Body camera footage of a responding officer was posted to the police department's social media and it shows the moment he arrived at the scene, hoping to find an adult but was shocked to find a 9-year-old girl instead.
"That's crazy. She was driving!?" the officer can be heard saying to another cop, who was consoling the children inside the car. Authorities further said that the girls wanted to go to California because they wanted to "swim in the ocean." West Jordan, where the children live, is located 13.5 miles from Salt Lake City. It is at least 800 miles from a California beach. The police said that though the car had "suffered serious damage," they were thankful that the girls didn't get hurt. "We suspect in large part because those little girls at least remembered to wear their seatbelts!" they added, according to PEOPLE.
