Shannen Doherty was diagnosed in 2019. She kept it private but was forced to inform her fans as she wanted to avoid twisted stories from other sources.
While we all know death is inevitable, knowing you have just a few days or months ahead of you is not easy to handle. No matter how strong of a person you are, it will take a toll on you emotionally. But, it is not impossible to live life appreciating every second you have with your loved one. Shannen Doherty, who gained worldwide attention with the portrayal of Brenda Walsh in the famous TV series, Beverly Hills, 90210 is doing just the same. The actress recently spoke about her cancer diagnosis and how her marriage has taken a different turn after the diagnosis.
Speaking to Good Morning America, Doherty revealed she was suffering from stage 4 breast cancer. "It's going to come out in a matter of days or a week that — I'm stage four. I don't think that I've processed it. It's a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways," said the actress. She added that the news of her relapse was revealed to her in 2019 while she was preparing on the reboot of Beverly Hills, 90210. But, she decided to deal with it privately.
With an ongoing lawsuit against insurance company State Farm, the actress knew the news of her cancer would go public. Instead of letting the news reach her fans from other sources, she finally gathered the courage to speak about it publically. "I'd rather people hear it from me. I don't want it to be twisted. I don't want it to be a court document. I want it to be real and authentic, and I want to control the narrative. I want people to know from me," said the actress.
Apart from that, she wanted others to know stage 4 cancer was not the end of life. "Our life doesn't end the minute we get that diagnosis. We still have some living to do," said the actress. Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. After going through a mastectomy and rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, she went into remission in 2018.
Though she is pained by the illness, the actress revealed it had strengthened her marriage and relationship. The 48-year-old married to Kurt Iswarienko since 2011 said cancer brought them closer than ever. “Cancer solidified us. Kurt and I have a much deeper appreciation for each other now,” said Doherty to People. She confirmed that they value each day with each other more than before. “It’s not that our marriage wasn’t good before. But we were definitely going through some growing pains. We would lock horns on things, and instead of resolving it, we wouldn’t speak for a couple of days. We don’t let a night go by mad at each other. The last time we had a big argument was pre-cancer," stated the actress, according to Health.com.
She opened up about how her partner's support helped her through the cancer journey. He gave her the strength and the motivation she needed while her body was giving up on her one step at a time. "How Kurt sees me really helps me be a better person. He was always like, ‘I’ve never seen someone handle something so difficult with so much grace. You’re so strong.’ And I figured out, it’s a quiet strength. And that is far sexier and appealing than I had before,” recalled Doherty.
She even went so far as to say, "For anybody to think that the only person altered by cancer is the person with cancer is incredibly wrong. Cancer alters the people in your life. And it’s shaped both of us. We look at life very differently now."
