While this is an unconventional story of two souls coming together, it is one of the most inspiring ones.
Through the hardships in life, it becomes tough to be positive and hopeful for the future. Many a time, we start questioning God's plans and start losing faith in goodness and love. For many of us, this is especially true in the case of romantic love. However, it may take just one moment to fill us up with joy and hope again. Something very similar happened with the global musician, Shakira. The singer has experienced love, pain, loss, and faith in their full might. But the experience just made her stronger than ever.
Shakira experienced one of the darkest phases in her life when she broke up with Antonio de la Rua. Not only was this an emotionally trying time for her, she also had to fight a legal battle against him. Apart from being her partner, De la Rua was also her manager, and sued her for $250 million amid their separation, and then again for $100 million. He alleged money-loss for having been unceremoniously cut from her business and also attempted to freeze her assets, reports E!Online.
This triggered her trauma and she started losing faith in love. However, due to a "prenuptial-type agreement applicable to unmarried couples" which they had earlier signed, the judgment was in her favor. Being the strong woman she is, she handled this phase with grace and moved on in life. She said at that time, "I have moved on in my life and could not be happier now," Shakira said at the time.
Moving on, she experienced unbridled joy in her life in 2010 when she met Spanish football player Gerard Piqué, who was just 22 at the time. Their paths crossed when Piqué, along with other global footballers, starred in Shakira's official FIFA song Waka Waka. "It all started when we were in South Africa and I wrote to her. She was already there because she sang in the opening ceremony and I asked her what the weather was like. It is the typical stupid question, and the normal answer is to tell me to bring a jacket," the footballer told TV3 in 2016. "But she started telling me what the weather was like in every single moment and it got to the point where I told her we would have to get to the World Cup final to see her again—she was singing at the final."
While Shakira, then almost 33, felt that he is too young for her, she couldn't help falling in love and that was all that mattered. "I thought, 'he's still a boy, but what can I do," she said. During the initial phase of their relationship, they stayed tight-lipped about their romantic equation but the anticipation in the media was at its peak, reports E!Online. The couple took a step forward in their relationship when Shakira decided to introduce her "sunshine" to the world with a romantic photo.
In 2012, the Hips don't lie hitmaker announced that they are expecting their first baby together, reports Oprahmag. They welcomed their son Milan in 2013. The following year she revealed that they do not have any plans to get married because they have what it takes to build a beautiful relationship and marriage would not change anything. "We already have what's essential, you know? We have a union, a love for each other, and a baby. I think that those aspects of our relationship are already established, and marriage is not going to change them," she told Glamour in 2014. "But if I'm ever going to get married, he's the one."
A year later, in 2015, they welcomed their second son Sasha. By now, the proud parents of two kids were inseparable. She went on to describe that her entire world now revolves around her two children, "I used to be the center of my world, and now I am only a satellite of my children. It's the hardest job I've ever had," she said.
They are head over heels in love with each other after years of togetherness. She even wrote a song about her and Gerard's love story -- Me Enamoré which was part of her album El Dorado, expressing her love for him from day one and how they started a family together.
Her story of love, loss, pain and finding love again shows that the light of love can seep into the darkest corners of your life and brighten it up.
In a 2013 interview with Elle, Shakira opened up about how meeting the love of her life restored her faith. "I think, if you can prove the existence of God, it can only be proven through love. I even had lost my faith for a while. I was becoming as agnostic," she said. "And it was really hard, because I was always very religious, and for a few years, maybe because—it sounds so corny—I was not feeling the love like it was supposed to be, I started to think that there was no God. And suddenly I meet Gerard and the sun comes out."
