Selfish Mother Locked Up 1-Year-Old Daughter In The Car At Night & Went Out Drinking On New Year's Eve

The mother now faces a slew of charges including child neglect, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct.

Mothers are often considered to be the epitome of love, protection, and selflessness according to popularly held beliefs. However, one woman from Tennessee didn't quite fit the bill after her careless and selfish actions. The woman chose to put her needs above her child and abandoned her one-year-old daughter in a car at night outside a bar so she could enjoy her new year celebrations.

According to NewsChannel 9, Sylvie King wanted to party and welcome the new year like a carefree person. But being the mother of a young child, she couldn't. Yet that did not stop her. The 25-year-old locked her little daughter inside the car that was parked outside a bar on Cherry Street in downtown Chattanooga. She then went ahead to party and get drunk.

It was only a matter of time that she would pay for her negligence. A concerned passerby happened to notice the little girl inside the vehicle an hour before midnight, and broke the windows of the car to rescue the child, according to the affidavit. They also notified the authorities about the baby who was left without any adult supervision.

The officers also asked the bar security guards to find the owner of the parked vehicle. However, the guards were left in the dark after no one claimed to be the owner even after they paged for them via an intercom.

Luckily, just moments after the guards asked for the owner, King came out of the bar and walked towards the car. On approaching the woman, the officers could "smell a heavy odor of alcohol coming from her." They also noted that her "speech was slurred, her eyes were glossy and red."

Additionally, they noted that she appeared "very disorganized and irate." The affidavit stated that the woman became furious after being questioned by the authorities about leaving the child unattended. "Ms. King immediately became irate and belligerent with police, causing a further disorder," said the affidavit.

After the officer failed to calm her down, she was arrested and taken into Hamilton County Jail. The authorities then placed the baby girl under the care of her grandmother, according to the New York Daily News. The mother now faces a slew of charges including child neglect, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct. However, she was later released.  She chose not to comment on the matter and both mother and baby are doing well now.

Sadly, such cases of child neglect are not a rarity. In 2019, a 2-year-old girl named June Love Agosto was left inside a car for hours by her mother, reports WGN TV. Though she initially told the police she was away just for a few minutes, she later admitted she was away drinking with a friend in a car nearby at around 11:30 pm on September 21.

The mother told the investigators that she had left the heater on and had also placed an additional blanket on her daughter to protect her from cold. Unfortunately, the mother fell asleep and woke up at 5 a.m. the next day. Her daughter was found unresponsive when she returned. Though the child was rushed to the hospital, she could not be saved. The child was found with apparent burns on her body had a temperature of 107.5 degrees. As per the Los Angeles County booking records, the mother had not been arrested. A GoFundMe account was set up to help the family for the funeral expenses at the time.
