The principal told the mother that she was missing the point when she questioned him and the staff on allowing such bullying.
Many at times, the bullying and harassment experienced by children are brushed off as trivial, playful pranks. This negligence often paves the way for more such behaviors. So, standing up against it and weeding out this problematic attitude towards such harassment is important. One mother set such an example. She intervened and took matters into her hands after her daughter was being harassed by a male classmate.
According to the tale narrated by the mother on Not Always Right, a boy from her daughter's class often pulled the strap of her bra in class. Though she asked him to stop doing it, the boy continued. Annoyed by the boy, the girl informed her male teacher. However, her complaint only hit his deaf ears. The teacher asked her to "ignore" the boy. But soon enough, the situation got out of hand. The boy undid the girl's bra and she hit him in rage.
Moments later, the mother received a call from the school at her place of work. The worried woman asked them if her daughter was alright thinking she was injured in some kind of accident. “[Daughter] has struck another pupil. We’ve been trying to call you for 45 minutes. It really is very serious," said the caller from the school.
The mother, who worked as an A&E nurse rushed to her daughter's school to understand the situation. On reaching the school, she saw the boy with "blood around his nose and a red face" along with her daughter, the staff, and the headmaster. She then heard the story along with the boy's parents.
"The boy had twanged my daughter’s bra and she had punched him in the face twice. I got the impression they were more angry with my daughter than the boy," stated the mother. The incident startled the mother.
While others expected her to apologize for her daughter's behavior, the mother shocked them and asked, "Oh. And you want to know if I’m going to press charges against him for sexually assaulting my daughter and against the school for allowing him to do it?”
However, some staff told her "it was not that serious" and asked her not to "overreact". The headmaster even had the audacity to point out she was missing the point. But the mother was not willing to take their senseless argument.
She turned to her daughter to know her side of the story. The girl stated, “He kept pinging my bra. I asked him to stop but he didn’t, so I told Mr. [Teacher]. He told me to ‘ignore it.’ [Boy] did it again and undid my bra so I hit him. Then he stopped.”
The mother was startled. She could not believe someone would tell her daughter to "ignore" a boy who was harassing her. She turned to the male teacher and asked, "You let him do this? Why didn’t you stop him? Come over here and let me touch the front of your trousers."
She then continued, "Does that seem inappropriate to you? Why don’t you go and pull on Mrs. [Head Of Year]’s bra right now. See how fun it is for her. Or on that boy’s mum’s bra. Or mine. You think just because they’re kids it’s fun?”
Despite the mother trying to explain why it cannot be ignored, the headmaster was most concerned about the girl hitting the boy.
The furious mother immediately defended her daughter and said, "She defended herself against a sexual attack from another pupil. Look at them; he’s nearly 6 feet and 11 or 12 stone. She’s 5 feet and 6 stone. He’s a foot taller than her and twice as heavy. How many times should she have let him touch her? If the person who was supposed to help and protect her in a classroom couldn’t be bothered what should she have done? He pulled her bra so hard it came undone.”
She further told the people gathered that she was taking her daughter home hoping the incident would not happen to any other girl at school. Besides, she warned the boy and said, "—EVER touch my daughter again I WILL have you arrested for sexual assault. Do you understand me?”
Additionally, the mother made sure her daughter was put in a different class and even reported the incident.
