American actor, producer, director, and podcaster Rob Lowe opened up about his experience of caring for his ailing mother in an eye-opening opinion piece for Newsweek a few years ago. In the article, the 58-year-old revealed that his first experience with unpaid caregiving was at the age of 26, watching his stepmother care for his father, Charles Lowe, who was diagnosed with lymphoma at age 50. Charles survived the deadly disease, but the actor believes the toll of being a caregiver during that stressful time may have contributed to his stepmother and father parting ways two years later.

Lowe experienced firsthand how emotionally exhausting this role is when he took on the care of his mother Barbara Hepler when she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in his late 30s. Although she didn't survive the battle with the deadly illness, the star revealed that the "scary, unbelievably stressful and painful" experience of caring for his ailing mother made him stronger than ever.
