Princess Diana And Prince Charles Cried On The Day Of Their Divorce, Reveals Documentary

She felt miserable and imprisoned in her own marriage. And things finally led to them separating. But it still pushed them to tears, knowing it was all over.

After vowing to spend an entire lifetime together, having to divorce your husband or wife can be one of the most hurtful experiences one can go through. But what made it even more painful for Princess Diana and Prince Charles was having to do it while the entire world was watching them.

Lady Diana had her fairytale wedding when she married the most eligible bachelor in the UK at the time Prince Charles in 1981, but it wasn't long before the People's Princess started feeling miserable and alone. Journalist Andrew Morton, who wrote Diana: Her True Story, told Channel 5 documentary, “She was absolutely miserable and she felt she was like a prisoner of the Palace," as reported by Express.

While she continued to put a smile on her face and accompany Prince Charles to official events, Princess Diana was keeping a number of secrets inside her, including her fears about her husband having an affair with Camilla Shand, who is now the wife of Prince Charles.

She even touched upon it in her interview with BBC in 1995 and said, "Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded," according to The Telegraph.

In one of the tapes that Princess Diana made for Andrew Morton, she even recalls one of the "one of the bravest moments" of her ten years of marriage was when she confronted Camilla about what was going on. Princess Diana recalled, "...I said: ‘I know what’s going on between you and Charles, and I just want you to know that.’.. She said to me: ‘You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world falling in love with you, and you’ve got two beautiful children. What more could you want?’

So I said: ‘I want my husband.’"

But even she knew it was "a bit crowded" in her marriage and she didn't want to be in the way anymore. Princess Diana continued to say in the tape, “I said to Camilla: ‘I’m sorry I’m in the way. It must be hell for both of you, but I do know what is going on. Don’t treat me like an idiot.’"

Ingrid Seward, editor of Royalty Magazine mentioned that one of the instances where Princess Diana's "worst fears came true" was when she came in the way of a package from Charles to Camilla. What Diana found were cufflinks engraved with two entwined C's. It was supposedly the same one that Camilla had given Charles on his honeymoon.

In the year 1994, Prince Charles even publicly admitted that he had been unfaithful to his wife, as reported by the Independent. "Until it became clear that the marriage had irretrievably broken down," Charles added in the interview.

After a turbulent marriage, Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced in August 1996. But both of them couldn't help but be pushed to tears. It was one of the most infamous divorces of the time. Seward said, “Diana did tell me something quite interesting. She said that on the day of the divorce, she and Charles sat down together on the sofa and they both cried.”

Although things became bitter in the marriage, the two of them, after all, had spent years by each other's side and had two sons together. Seward went on to say, “It was this crazy separation, but by the time the divorce was finalized, they were on much better terms.”

While it may have been extremely tough at the time, Princess Diana was freed from a prisoning marriage and went on to continue her work around the world. And Prince Charles also went on to marry Camilla in 2005, according to Good Housekeeping, and are still together.
