As her younger son becomes a father, people can't help but wonder about how Princess Diana would have been a great grandmother.
Soon after Meghan Markle gave birth to a baby boy, the world saw Prince Harry walk out and proudly announce the birth of his son. He couldn't help but gush over the birth of his boy and has taken his first steps into fatherhood. And as he did so, he took a moment to honor his mother, Princess Diana in a very special way that's never been done before.
The couple was able to make a special tribute to Princess Diana by ensuring that her three siblings were among the first to be informed about the birth, according to the Daily Mail. Typically, the first to be informed is the Queen and then the immediate family in the palace. Meghan and Harry ensured Diana's siblings were included as the first circle of loved ones. This was not according to the usual protocol; something that didn't happen when Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed Prince Louis in April 2018.
Seeing Princess Diana's younger son take on the role of a father is showing the world just how similar they are. There's so much about Princess Diana that is still alive in Prince Harry and nobody doubts that he'll be a great parent, just like his mother. “Harry’s the one that’s got so much of Diana in him,” said Emma Forbes who has connections with the royal family, according to People. “I was actually thinking about that this morning – how tragic it is that she’s not alive because she’d be the most incredible grandmother.”
Despite all her royal duties, Princess Diana always took time out for her children and remained a huge part of their lives. When Prince Harry reminisced his time with Princess Diana in a documentary, he said "...she was the best mum in the world. She smothered us with love, that’s for sure.” He also said, “She was one of the naughtiest parents,” according to The Telegraph.
Princess Diana was the reason why both Prince William and Prince Harry had a life outside the palace. She broke royal protocols and earned herself the reputation of being the "rebel royal mum". While growing up, her sons were the first royals to experience ordinary things that really make childhood special. "She made sure that they experienced things like going to the cinema, queuing up to buy a McDonalds, going to amusement parks, those sorts of things that were experiences that they could share with their friends," said Patrick Jephson, who was Princess Diana's chief of staff for six years, according to ABC News.
"Sources within Kensington Palace would say to me, 'Every morning the boys would run in their pajamas into her bedroom, and she'd have her arms open wide to hug them,'" said Judy Wade, the royal contributor to Hello! magazine.
As a grandmother, Princess Diana wouldn't have been any different. She might have been the grandmother who showered her grandchildren with love and joined them in their childish mischief.
"She'd love the children to bits, but she'd be an absolute nightmare," Prince William jokingly said, according to E! Online. "She'd come and go and she'd come in probably at bath time, cause an amazing amount of scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place, and then leave."
Who wouldn't love a daredevil kind of grandmother to have fun with, right?
Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, who is Princess Diana's younger brother, had also once said, “One of the great tragedies is that Diana would have been the best grandmother ever.”
Princess Diana would probably have been joyously celebrating the birth of Prince Harry's son, who would have been her fourth grandchild. But it's great to see her memory still kept alive through her sons, and hopefully, her grandchildren as they grow up.
What also made the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's son special was that the little one shares his birthday with George Clooney, who might be a potential godfather to him. George Clooney has shared a strong friendship with Meghan Markle for a while now and he might be on the list of possible godparents to the new royal baby.
Soon, the world will be able to see Prince Harry taking on adventures with his son on one side and Meghan Markle on the other. Forbes also said, “Harry will be one of those fathers that gets the balance right between being hands-on and taking adventures. I could so see him traveling with a son at his side.”
