Queen Elizabeth Was By My Side “During the Saddest Days of My Life,” Says Prince William About Loving Grandmother

He spoke for the first time through a statement posted on Instagram after his grandmother's death.

Prince William has paid touching homage to his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. The Prince of Wales appreciated his 'Grannie's' assistance throughout his life through difficult moments in an Instagram post. This is the first time William has spoken after the Queen died on September 8, reports Daily Mail. He wrote, "She was by my side at my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life."

After Diana's death on 31 August 1997, her majesty protected the princes fiercely and became a mother figure for them. When the news of Diana's death came at midnight the princes were staying at Balmoral with their grandmother and were asleep. The Queen directed her aides to let the young boys sleep in before informing them that Diana had died in hospital following the tragedy in Paris.

On that Sunday morning, the family went to church as usual, but the Queen barred any reference to Diana's death from the ceremony. After informing William and Harry of their mother's death, the Queen sheltered them from distressing information about the disaster by asking servants to hide all televisions and radios at Balmoral.

The Queen evolved into a maternal figure for the princes, who grew up quite close to their grandmother. William paid tribute to his grandma for all of her assistance when he was a teenager ahead of the Queen's 90th birthday in 2016. He said during the time, "Having lost my mother at a young age, it's been particularly important to me that I've had somebody like the Queen to look up to and who's been there and who has understood some of the more complex issues when you lose a loved one."

He added, "She's been incredibly supportive and I've really appreciated her guidance." He expressed his gratitude for everything the Queen had done for him and his family in his tribute. He added in the Instagram post, "I have had the benefit of the Queen's wisdom and reassurance into my fifth decade. My wife has had twenty years of her guidance and support. My three children have got to spend holidays with her and create memories that will last their whole lives." He added, "It will be some time before the reality of life without Grannie will truly feel real."

"I thank her for the kindness she showed my family and me. And I thank her on behalf of my generation for providing an example of service and dignity in public life that was from a different age, but always relevant to us all." He concluded, "My grandmother famously said that grief was the price we pay for love. All of the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be a testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary Queen."
