Princess Diana referred to her wedding as the "worst" day of her life.
Prince Charles and Diana had a tumultuous marriage despite Diana's efforts to make it work. Their differences could not be neglected and Prince Charles's heart was reserved for another woman. According to a recent report, Diana knew she was entering a loveless marriage even before the grand wedding ceremony. The Prince himself exposed Diana to the future of her marriage.
According to People, Penny Thornton, an astrologer consulted by Diana, revealed Diana knew Charles did not love her. The night before her fairytale wedding, Charles told Diana he was not in love with her. The truth broke her heart, to the extent that she even considered opting out of her wedding.
"One of the most shocking things that Diana told me was that the night before the wedding Charles told her that he didn't love her," Thornton said. "I think Charles didn't want to go into the wedding on a false premise. He wanted to square it with her and it was devastating for Diana," said Thornton in ITV's new documentary The Diana Interview: Revenge of a Princess.
She added, "She didn't want to go through with the wedding at that point, she thought about not attending the wedding."
According to CheatSheet, the princess did have a dilemma on the day of her wedding. She even told her sisters that she might not be able to go through with the wedding. However, her sisters discouraged her.
In the documentary, Diana: In Her Own Words, the Princess recalled the background scenes from her extravagant wedding. “I went upstairs, had lunch with my sisters who were there, and I said, ‘I can’t marry him. I can’t do this. This is absolutely unbelievable,’” said Diana, according to CheatSheet.
However, Diana was helpless and could do nothing but marry the future Prince of England. Also, knowing that her husband's relationship with Camilla, Diana's eyes kept searching for Camilla as soon as she entered the wedding venue.
"I knew she was in there, of course. I looked for her. So walking down the aisle, I spotted Camilla, pale gray, veiled pillbox hat, saw it all, her son Tom standing on a chair. To this day you know — vivid memory," recounted the princess, according to Good House Keeping. With all that was happening, her wedding day turned out to be the "worst" day of her life. "I felt as though I was a lamb going to the slaughter," said Diana to biographer Andrew Morton, according to Express UK.
Though it was clear her husband had no love for her, she still tried to build her relationship with him. However, as years went by, their differences only grew and they failed to find a common ground. Prince Charles went to find comfort in his ex-lover's hands and Diana too went on to have her share of affairs.
They eventually parted away and got legally divorced in 1996. “If I could write my own script I would have my husband go away with his woman and never come back," said the princess, according to The Telegraph after they separated.
