The gesture touched his prom date's heart and left her in tears. Adding to that, his talent caught the eye of a teacher, who recommended his work to a local director as well.
A couple of stitches were all that this young gentleman had sown his entire life before he decided to do something extremely special for his prom date. Parker Smith, a high school junior, went from having sewn absolutely nothing to making a stunning prom dress from top to bottom for his best friend and date.
In the lead up to prom at Pendleton Heights, senior Addi Rust had laid eyes on a dress that she absolutely loved but couldn't afford. Seeing that the price was out of her budget, she joked to her date and said, "Parker, why don’t you just make my prom dress!"
They laughed at the idea but after giving it a minute's thought, Parker decided to take it upon himself to turn Addi's prom into a memorable one.
"You know what, I think I could actually make your prom dress," Parker told her, as reported by Fox 59. The fact that he'd never stitched before didn't stop him.
The teenager quickly got to work and sketched out his own original design for Addi. With a few tips here and there from his grandmother, Parker began teaching himself how to stitch. And months later, his efforts turned into a beautiful dress.
Although he wanted to have it complete with enough time left before prom, Parker wanted the dress to be perfect and kept re-doing several parts of it.
"I’m such a perfectionist that I was up adding more stones to the dress even the night before prom," he said.
Every now and then, he would show it to Addi but when Parker brought the final result to her on prom night, she was moved to tears.

Although this was Parker's very first piece that he's sewn from scratch and completed, it was destined not to be his last. With dreams of becoming a Broadway costume designer, Parker hopes to study costume design and musical theatre in college.
Quite a journey, but the first thing I’ve ever sewn (a prom dress) has been finished, just in time for the ball! Not only did I get the honor of being the Prince Charming to the beautiful @AddiRust, but her fairy godmother as well, haha! I’m so thankful for her. When he spoke about the vast media coverage he received for the dress, he said, "It was a totally bizarre never expected. I had only sewed two stitches before I did it. Every big moment out of it, we were just having fun."
After the prom dress went viral and reached the corners of the internet, Parker didn't have to wait too long for his next big project. His talent is being showcased in the Cinderella show at Footlite Musicals in Indy.
Parker's stint with the show began when the director, Bob Harbin had a conversation with a friend, who also happened to be Parker's teacher.
"He was looking for a maker of a dress," said Parker. "My teacher said I might know a kid."
"She said, "Oh you know that kid, that kid, who did that prom dress thing?” the show's director recalled, "When you see the work, his sketches, the guy's got it or the guy doesn’t, and he’s definitely talented."
Parker was able to create two dresses—the character's peasant dress and the character's ball gown. But that's not all; he was able to make it in such a way that the former transforms into the latter right on stage, and it's a delight to watch.
Here’s the transformation aspect I made created for these gowns I’ve sewn up. Once again, THANK YOU, Cinderella! pic.twitter.com/JF2TUVT7yi— Parker Keith Smith (@parkerkeithsmit) December 5, 2019
While Parker's talent hopefully takes him places, the "prince charming" has the support of his best friend, Addi, the very first person for whom he designed and created a dress from scratch.
Been trying to decide what I was gonna say about this but honestly I’m so speechless about my best friends talent, you guys. My Prince Charming did it again!! So so so proud of you, bestie. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ https://t.co/oZ0OruTZOq— adrianna (@AddiRust) December 5, 2019
