Ozzy Osbourne stood by his wife even when he could not handle the pain himself. He tried to cheer her up and encouraged her to fight her illness.
Having been with a person for years, it is impossible to imagine a world without them. The thought in itself is so heartbreaking that it takes away your happiness and hope in life. Singer and musician Ozzy Osbourne went through such a tough phase when his wife, Sharon was diagnosed with cancer. Unable to cope up with the sudden and shocking news, the heavy metal singer broke down emotionally.
In 2002, the singer, who is known to be very anxious about his health, went through with a routine check-up. The tests revealed the presence of polyps on his colon. However, the doctors informed that he was absolutely fine. Having done his tests, Ozzy wanted to make sure his wife was well too. However, it took him a lot to convince Sharon to do the tests especially because she hated hospitals.
"Everyone knows Ozzy is the world's biggest hypochondriac... he's always having things checked out. He went in for a physical in June and they found polyps (small growths) on his colon. He was relieved that everything turned out all right, but he kept on at me to get checked as well. He bothered me night and day, so I finally gave in and went. I absolutely hate doctors - and hospitals even more," told the talk show host to Evening Standard.
In order to make her husband happy, Sharon went ahead with the tests. However, the results that came out stunned Sharon and shattered Ozzy's world. On 3 July 2002, Sharon was diagnosed with colon cancer. "I was alarmed. I knew something wasn't right. I can't explain the way I felt. It was as if someone had punched me in the stomach," recalled Sharon. The news from her doctors came as a surprise and the family could not believe it. "When I heard the news I simply and utterly fell apart at the seams. This is the love of my life, and the thought that I could lose her was more than I could bear," said the singer, known as the Prince of Darkness.
The couple, along with their three children, was overcome with emotions. Though Ozzy tried to cheer his wife with her dog, Minnie, the singer himself was broken and traumatized. "Buckets and buckets of tears. When Ozzy met us at the airport he had brought my precious dog, Minnie, to cheer me up. He was hysterical, just terrified," recalled the 67-year-old TV host.
Sharon started her treatment with the help of her supportive family. However, Ozzy was buried in pain. He checked up on her continuously and did everything he could to make her feel better. Recalling the phase, the couple's youngest daughter, Kelly, revealed her father's reaction when his wife suffered a massive seizure. In her book, There Is No F*cking Secret, Kelly said that her father overdosed when he heard his wife had suffered a seizure. “Dad could not handle the thought of losing mum,” said the daughter, according to The Sun. She also added "leaned over to put his hand out to see if mum was breathing. Then he passed out with his hand over [Sharon's] mouth."
Kelly also revealed that Ozzy contacted Robin Williams to persuade Sharon to continue her chemotherapy when she had just given up. "Mum had gotten to a point in her chemotherapy that she’d kind of given up because it was when mum’s hair started to fall out. Mum was lying in this bedroom that she had curtained off. It was pitch black. She hadn’t gotten out of bed for like a week. We couldn’t get her to go back to finish the chemo. Dad said laughter is the best medicine. And organized for Robin to come over and make mum laugh," said Kelly. Gathering her courage, Sharon went back to continue her treatment. Meanwhile, Ozzy made her feel loved and kept trying to put a smile on her face. He sent her flowers and called her up tirelessly. "He calls every 10 minutes just to make sure I'm all right. It's very sweet actually, that's why I fell in love with him to begin with," said Sharon.
Soon, Sharon went into remission and the couple was relieved. However, their marriage was never a bed of roses. Filled with challenges, the couple separated for a while. However, soon they decided to unite.
In 2017, the couple renewed their vows celebrating their 35 years of marriage. Ozzy is thankful for his wife and admitted he was working on his shortcomings. “Without Sharon, I am nothing. I love her. I can honestly say that I have never loved anybody other than my wife,” said the Black Sabbath vocalist to People.
Sharon, on the other hand, said, to E News, “It was hard to rebuild the trust, but I can’t imagine my life without Ozzy... We’ve fallen in love all over again.”
