Some students claimed the teacher did as a joke. But the mother said her daughter was humiliated.
Teachers are meant to guide their students politely. While discipline is important, students should not be left to feel humiliated in front of others in class. However, a teacher put duct tape over her student's mouth to prevent her from talking too much.
According to WLKY, 10-year-old Reagan was humiliated in front of her classmates after her teacher used duct tape to silence her in class. The child's mother, Victoria Phillips stated that the incident took place at Dupont Tyler Middle School. The incident has left the mother furious. "I am angry, I am hurt, and I am driven," said the mother about the incident that occurred in 2018. However, the mother admitted that her daughter had a habit of talking a lot.
She stated that her daughter talked a lot in class because she was very excited to learn new things. She also claimed that Reagan often interrupted the class with her questions without raising her hand. However, the mother stated she had been working to resolve this issue with the teacher.
But Phillips said she was shocked by the incident that took place in class. Recalling how her daughter told narrated the incident, Philips stated, "Reagan started to cry, and I am like, 'What's going on? Tell me what happened Reagan.' And she's like, 'Well she put tape on my mouth.' She put tape over your mouth?' And she said, 'Yeah. Everybody laughed at me. I pulled it off' and she said, 'That's why my lip was bleeding.'"
A student from the class stated, "The teacher was trying to get the class to be quiet, and when Reagan was still talking, the teacher got out the tape from the desk and put it on Reagan’s mouth."
Another student from the class came to the support of the teacher. The student claimed that the teacher did it as a joke and said that there was no lack of respect towards her students.
Though the student said it was just a silly joke, the mother stated that it was unacceptable. Phillips argued that the teacher publically shamed her daughter. "That messes with you for life," she explained. "And then as a mother to protect, it’s like, that messed up our trust, she felt like I knew about it and I allowed it to happen," said Phillips, according to Fatherly.
Enraged by the incident, the mother wanted the teacher to publically apologize to her young daughter. "I would like for her to make a public statement and a public apology to my daughter. She was humiliated," said the mother, according to CBS Local.
Meanwhile, the Metro Nashville Public School authorities said they expect their teachers and other employees to act professionally with the students. They also urged parents to act immediately if they had any complaints, according to Fox17. They also stated they would take action if there were any events against the code of conduct. The Department of Child Services looked into the complaint. However, it is not known if the teacher was punished.
