Single mom Haley Hassell was thrilled to see her daughter's reaction to the much-awaited LOL pencil box. However, the little girl just threw a tantrum that annoyed her mother.
We love our children dearly and make sure they have everything they want or need, it is important for us to make sure that they don't take things for granted. As parents, we should teach them to be appreciative of what they have and enlighten them about the challenges faced by other underprivileged families. Such kind of parenting will take kids a long way, making them responsible and empathetic human beings. A mom from Florida did just that. She knew her little daughter needed to be taught a lesson that she should always remember in life.
Haley Hassell took to Facebook to talk about an incident that took place at her home. The mother of a 6-year-old daughter Presleigh told users that she surprised her with the LOL pencil box that she had asked for. Haley had been to three different stores to get what her daughter likes, and was excited to see her ecstatic. However, her daughter responded differently than expected. Instead of thanking her mom for the surprise gift, she stared at the box and then tossed it straight into the bin.
"She yelled 'that’s stupid, everyone in my class has that...I don’t want it anymore!' 🛑🤯🤔...," wrote the mother on Facebook. Haley was astonished at her reaction and thought that it was time to show her ungrateful daughter some tough love. Haley decided to gift her daughter a minimalistic version of a pencil box, a plastic sandwich bag that was inscribed by the words," Presleigh's pencil bag."
"She lost her mind! Suddenly the LOL Box she just trashed was good enough and the Ziploc bag was horrible... but it’s too late for all that," wrote the mother. Though her daughter was convinced that the pencil case was much better than the plastic case, Haley told her daughter that she had to use the plastic bag. "I told her to get the LOL out of the trash and we would be finding a child to give it to, tomorrow... one whose mommy and daddies don’t have money for any school supplies or someone who may not even have a mommy or daddy," wrote the mother. She further went on to tell her daughter the importance of being grateful.
"She's had her moments but never anything like that. I was trying to be calm. She's only 6 so I have to be flexible in how to handle it. I don't want to break her heart, but also don't want her to think she can act like that. It's not how I was raised. I sat down and told her, 'There's people whose mommies and daddies [can't afford] to buy them school supplies. You have to think about these things before you talk and act like that, so for now, this is what you're going to use and we are going to find someone who will be grateful for it.'" told the mother to Good morning America.
Haley's Facebook post became widely popular and garnered 59K shares and 131K likes. Many applauded the mother for her clever parenting. "Great lesson for her!! This will help me in the future!!," wrote one while another user said," Good for you mom!! She will thank you later in life for being that way."
However, Haley told Good Morning America that she received messages that criticized her, "I got personal messages in my inbox saying that I was a monster mother ... they were saying I was a bad parent and bad parents raise bad children," she said. "I was just on a rant when I wrote it. I didn't think people were going to share it. People were saying I was publicly shaming my daughter, which I don't really agree with."
Though the reactions of the public may be mixed, Presleigh learned a great lesson and even mailed her LOL pencil case to a 5-year-old girl in Utah. "Nothing is going to be easy, but when something is given to you, you've got to be grateful," says the mother.
