The 39-year-old mom welcomed her stepkids as her own into her life, and her family is devastated at their unexpected loss.
When we start a family with our beloved partner, we assume that we will have the rest of our lives together. We make plans and goals to secure that future but life is unexpected, and no matter how much we plan, it's not enough. After all, God has his own plans too.
A devoted mom in Texas had dreamed of having a baby girl after being a mom to 10 boys, biological and stepkids, to complete her family. Sonya Harlow was able to attain her wish but she will never be able to see her baby girl grow up. Fortunately, she got at least 11 days with her daughter before passing away unexpectedly.
Sonya, who was only 39, shared 10 kids with her husband of eight years, Spencer. Some of their children were from their previous marriages. "She didn’t consider any of them stepchildren… They were her kids and she loved them with all she had," wrote her best friend on a GoFundMe page. The couple prayed to have a little girl, whom they named Eliyanah, who is only a few weeks old, according to The Bluebonnet News. "She had all boys before this and she prayed for a girl. We named our daughter Eliyanah and she is God’s answer to our prayers. Eliyanah means 'God has answered,'" Spencer said.
The mother-of-10 had complications during her pregnancy, like high blood pressure and other issues, which stopped her from being able to work. She used to work as an admissions director in the healthcare industry. With her at home for several months, Spencer, a disabled veteran who served in the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, is the only earning member of the Livingston-based family.
"Sonya was such a good mother and wife," he told The Bluebonnet News. "She was the most beautiful woman I’ve ever known. She was so vibrant and full of life. She was loving, kind, and caring."
The 39-year-old woman was happy to have her family complete, but she didn't get to have that happiness long. Around 2 am on November 15, her husband woke up to find her in distress. She was lying next to him in bed with their newborn daughter on her chest. "I rolled over and could see she was dying," he said. "We did CPR on her until the paramedics arrived, but she had flatlined by then. It was too late." He suspects that there may have been a postpartum-related medical emergency, which hopefully an autopsy will determine.
Sonya's best friend of 17 years, Nancy Leger Davie, set up a GoFundMe page for the Harlow family. "I don't know how I'm going to live my life without her," Nancy told The Bluebonnet News. "She's been such a huge part of my life."
On the GoFundMe page, Nancy wrote that the family needs financial help with Sonya gone, and for her funeral costs. "Having not been able to work for several months before giving birth her husband has been supporting all of them on his income alone. Since this was so unexpected, there’s no life insurance or money set aside. Any money raised will be used towards funeral expenses/headstone. And if there’s anything left over It will be used to care for her children. If you ever met Sonya, you would know that she was one of the most caring, loving, godly, and giving people you would ever meet," she added.
