Michael Douglas was shattered by his son's path of living. He feared that he would lose him but soon, things took a different turn.
The fear of losing your child is painful. It can destroy your peace and make you feel helpless. Actor Michael Douglas once endured those heartbreaking emotions. Like any other parent, he wanted his child to be safe and happy but at one point, he thought he had lost his kid forever.
Michael Douglas's firstborn Cameron Douglas was just a teenager when he entered the dark world of drugs. Though it started with drinks and pot-smoking, the teenager soon started taking hard drugs. By his 20s, the young man had got himself buried in a spiraling habit of drug intake and dealings. His worried parents, Michael and his former wife Diandra Luker were in constant pain.
They tried to correct their son's ways but all their efforts were in vain. “There were moments when hope dwindled… and then it’s just a train out of the station. Life became a series of crises. I thought I was going to lose him,” said the 75-year-old actor, speaking to People. Michael dearly loved his son and wanted him to recover from his addictions. However, Cameron had not yet made up his mind.
In 2009, the actor was heartbroken when his then 31-year-old son was sentenced to five years in prison for conspiring to sell drugs. “The family is devastated and very disappointed in Cameron’s recent behavior. Any family who has dealt with substance abuse knows how devastating it can be," said the family in a joint statement. The saddened father felt they had failed their son. In his letter to the judge, Michael said Cameron was on his path to recovery. He added that his son was capable of being a better person.
“I get to witness the wonderful young man he can be. He maintains his spirit, blames no one but himself, and recognizes his criminal activity began with his heroin use,” wrote Michael as reported by People.
However, Cameron fell back into his old ways as a result of which his imprisonment was extended. He was placed in solitary confinement for almost 2 years. "Right now I'm being told I cannot see him for two years. It's been over a year now, and I'm questioning the system. Obviously, at first I was disappointed with my son, but I've reached a point now where I'm very disappointed with the system," said the distressed father.
Soon, things turned upside down for the Douglas family. Completing his term in prison, Cameron emerged a new man. There was nothing that could make his father happier than to see his child turn his life over. He started to focus on his acting career and began a family of his own.
The young actor, who recently welcomed his daughter Luca with longtime girlfriend, Vivianne Thibes said, "I hated the wreckage I saw in my life because of drugs, but I just couldn’t stop." Cameron went on to credit his family for being with him during the dark phase. "I lived a nightmare for seven years but the love of my family never wavered."
He even opened up about his father's never-ending support and love. "Been there through thick and thin, never once did you quit on me... I love you with all my heart," wrote the 40-year-old on Instagram on Father's Day.
Michael too expressed his joy of getting back his son. "My son’s struggle was a nightmare. It was stressful for all involved, very painful and difficult. I’m happy to say he’s in wonderful shape now," said a proud father. Apart from being with his son, the 75-year-old is happy to be a grandfather for the first time.
Though it took years, Michael finally saw the transformation of his child. Like any other parent, that was more than enough to calm the waves of his heart.
