Michael Caine Celebrates 50 Years of Marriage, Credits Wife For Saving Him | "Without Her, I’d Have Been Dead Long Ago"

The 'Zulu' actor said he used to drink a bottle of vodka a day and smoke several packs of cigarettes. He changed his ways for her.

Michael Caine made his breakthrough in the 1960s after appearing in iconic blockbuster hits such as The Ipcress File and The Italian Job. Caine had the reputation of being the ladies' man but that was only until he saw Shakira Baksh in a coffee commercial for Maxwell House in the early 1970s. He fell head over heels for her and was keen to meet her. He recalled thinking she was Brazilian, reported PEOPLE. He would eventually find her and woo her. The couple got married and recently celebrated their 50th anniversary together. Caine says he owes a lot to his wife. He revealed that “he’d be dead long ago” if it wasn’t for Shakira who cared for him as a doted wife.

The marvelous actor who has been nominated for the Oscars six times jokingly shared that it took a few attempts to convince his wife to go out with him. The Children of Men actor says it took eleven calls before Shakira agreed to meet him, reported News.com.au. Ever since they've been inseparable. The lovebirds wed in 1973 and have a daughter together, Natasha. The actor disclosed how his habits before the marriage weren’t healthy as he tells he would drink “a bottle of vodka and smoke several packets of cigarettes a day". Crediting his wife the actor says: “Without her, I’d have been dead long ago. I used to drink a bottle of vodka a day and smoke several packs of cigarettes. I’ll probably drop dead talking to you.”
