"We first met, I saw him across the room, he saw me and then I freaked out because I’ve never had somebody look at me like that. It was such a familiar look. As in, it felt like home. I could see my soulmate," she revealed.
"It was like a love story that didn’t have a perfect ending," said Mel B about her relationship with Eddie Murphy.
Over a decade after their relationship came to an end, Melanie 'Mel B' Brown still believes that he was the love of her life and always will be.
When she looks back at their relationship, it hurts her to think that he was the one that got away. "We had something special that I’ve never really truly felt with anybody else," the Spice Girl said in a TV interview, as quoted by Mirror. "I’ve thought I’ve had it, but they’ve lied. His was pure. He is the love of my life. He always will be."
They hit it off for the first time in 2006 when they met at a party that Murphy was throwing at his Beverly Hills home. This was after he had asked her out on a date but she wanted something more casual, which led to him throwing a party where they could connect.
"He wanted to have a date with me by myself, I was like, ‘no. Get him to do a dinner party at his house or something like that’. And so I went along to his house and there was a massive, massive dinner party going on. I’m like, oh my God. Where is he?" Mel B recalled.
She went on to say, "We first met, I saw him across the room, he saw me and then I freaked out because I’ve never had somebody look at me like that. It was such a familiar look. As in, it felt like home. I could see my soulmate. So I ran to the restroom. Then I left and I went home."
Feeling jittery, Mel B made up an excuse to leave the party, saying that she had to attend another party that her friend was throwing at the Mondrian hotel in West Hollywood. While she managed to escape from his party at home, she couldn't bluff her way out of the second one because the comedian shifted his own party to the same hotel.
"I was like oh God, I’ve got to put my make-up back on, I’ve got to get dressed; go to the Mondrian because I lied about the Mondrian," the singer said. "And there he was, with his party at the Mondrian that he’d moved from his house in Beverly Hills to West Hollywood. I’m like, oh God, that’s really nice that you did that. I got all like jittery again, and I’m not a nervous person; I went, ‘I’m just gonna go to the bathroom.' And he goes, 'Over my dead body.'"
Murphy walked her to the bathroom, waited for her, and then walked her back to the table, almost like he didn't want to let her out of his sight again.
"From that day, he said, ‘Can I spend every day with you?’" Mel B said. And thus began their romance as they started seeing more of each other. Marriage already became a subject of their conversations after just a couple of months into the relationship.
She described him as a "gentleman" and he even asked her father if he could marry his daughter.
"...We designed some rings together and then we planned the baby and we got pregnant – and then I felt suffocated," she admitted.
The couple had a fight over her independence which included arguing about buying a house, according to The Guardian. While she wanted them to buy the house together, Murphy wanted to buy it for her. That's when she walked out and took a flight to Leeds, where she didn't answer any of his calls.
During this time, Mel B also saw Murphy denying to a reporter that she was bearing his child. "I don’t know whose child that is until it comes out and has a blood test," he told the reporter at the time. Later, it was proved that the child, indeed, was Murphy's.
Years passed and Mel B revealed that their daughter, Angel has a close relationship with her father. "The last two years, Angel goes there every other week -- whenever she wants, holidays, whenever -- and they have a very good, strong relationship and I'm so happy about that," said Mel B about Angel and Murphy's relationship, to ET in 2018.
Although there might be no chance of Mel B and Murphy rekindling their relationship, she said in an interview with Good Morning Britain, according to People, that "he always will be" the "great love" of her life.
