Meg Ryan was blamed for the divorce by the media but the actress came out to clear the air.
Being disloyal in a relationship can break the trust between partners and can eventually mess with the mental and emotional peace of both parties. Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid's relationship was such a kind. Their marriage ended up in one of the worst divorces in Hollywood.
Ryan and Quaid met each other in 1987 during the filming of the movie, Innerspace. However, the couple started dating only in 1988. After just three years of being together, the couple decided to tie the knot in 1991. And a year later, they welcomed their son Jack. However, their marriage wasn't going well. Nine years after the wedding, rumors spread regarding Ryan's affair with Russell Crowe, which led to a split in 2000.
The media pointed fingers at the Sleepless in Seattle actress for breaking up the marriage. Due to this, Ryan moved away from the public eye for a while, and only spoke about the divorce in 2006. Appearing on The Oprah Show, the actress mentioned that her heartbreaking divorce was depicted black and white by the tabloids. She stated, "I didn't leave my marriage for Russell Crowe. My marriage wasn't working."
But years later, in an interview with W magazine in October of 2000, Ryan came out to speak of how her relationship with Quaid had already reached a breaking point. According to Today, she told Instyle that she was not the factor that broke her marriage. "It was a great story. But what wasn’t in the story was the reality of my marriage for nine years. Dennis was not faithful to me for a long time, and that was very painful. I found out more about that once I was divorced," said the actress
The actress went on to say that her decision not to address her former husband's betrayal made her look at the villain and added to spoiling her public image. But speaking of it now, she says it was an agonizing phase in her life. "I think I made a mistake in not talking more specifically. I am not a victim. I was there. I was in that marriage for a really long time. Some days you think, 'This is so crazy', and you are all intellectual about it. And other days, it’s just really, really painful," said the 58-year-old actress, according to Marie Claire.
Though she was immensely scrutinized by the media for the divorce, Ryan decided to focus on her personal life and her son. "I didn’t have to care about what people thought. I could…be totally under the radar and live my life," said the actress. In 2006, she even adopted a baby girl. She even came back to Hollywood by starring in a comedy, The Women.
Since then, Ryan has generally stayed out of the limelight. Her public appearances are rare now. She was most recently seen grocery shopping in Manhattan, New York, according to Closer Weekly.
