The video captured a couple's awkward moment at the Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays game over the weekend.
One often imagines public proposals to be the sweetest. With people around, swooning and cheering, the moment often becomes all the more special for a couple. Moreover, the effort that goes into pulling off a grand, unique gesture is ridiculously romantic. However, it is also smart to think through and save yourself a whole lot of embarrassment before planning a proposal of this kind. A viral video on TikTok, which already has more than 200,000 views in under 48 hours, captured one such public proposal gone horribly wrong at a baseball game.
The crowds gathered at the Rogers Centre in Toronto to watch the Toronto Blue Jays take on the Boston Red Sox were horrified to witness a sweet public proposal quickly turn ugly, reported New York Post.
In the video, the man can be seen stopping the woman as she was about to take a seat. He proceeds to make his grand romantic gesture in front of an audience. As he goes down on one knee to propose, the woman covers her face with her hand in disbelief and happiness. The act quickly draws the attention of people around. They look on in delight, anticipating a sweet moment to unveil. Alas! Neither the poor guy nor the audience could have guessed what happened next. As he opened the box to pop the question, the woman's smile and excitement rapidly vanish. Much to her shock, the man brings out a Ring Pop - a gummy ring - from the box. Enraged to see the gummy version instead of a real ring, the woman can be seen slapping the man across the face and yelling, "What the f--k is wrong with you?" Upset, she tosses her ice-cold drink on him before walking away.
Witnessing such an unexpected turn of events, her reaction left the crowd in shock and disbelief. The man took a minute to register what happened and clearly must have been heartbroken himself.
As the video quickly went viral, people started dropping all sorts of opinions in comments. Some were just amused, while others had quite a bit to say. Debating who was in the wrong, some came forward, supporting the woman. "I can see how a woman might feel undervalued and/or unappreciated if she doesn't see the humor in this, or maybe just not on such a big stage. A more intimate proposal might have been more appropriate," one person commented. "This guy got what he deserved," said a furious user.
Some wrote in the man's defense and found it unkind on the woman's part to react so harshly in a public setting. "She's evil. Let her go. He deserves better," a user wrote. Many viewers just couldn't wrap their heads around the matter, saying the whole act was orchestrated just for grabbing attention on social media. With a tipped-off videographer seen in the background, it does seem that the fake proposal was staged.
The ring pop was a classy touch.— Blair Hough (@soundslikeHuff) October 3, 2022
This screams 'millenials calling attention to themselves for a weak YouTube video'
Other viewers were observant enough to point out a bulge in the guy's pocket and wondered if the gummy ring was just a silly prank before he pulled out the actual engagement ring.
Probably had the 'Big One' in his other back pocket! But now he found out what she's really like.— catnip (@catnip38240603) October 3, 2022
Whether it was an act, a silly prank, or an actual moment of heartbreak, it sure added some extra spice to the weekend game.
