Mom Breastfeeding In Public Offers Perfect Response To Stranger Who Asked Her To Cover Up

Melanie Dudley was on vacation with her family when a stranger approached and asked her to cover up.

A Texas mom was shamed for breastfeeding in public but that didn't stop her from clapping back. Melanie Dudley was on vacation with her family and the weather was incredibly hot. She tried to discreetly breastfeed her 3-month-old son in the corner of a restaurant but the heat was getting to her and her baby. “I did have the cover on, but it was so hot. It was like, 95 degrees, and my little baby was sweating," she told TODAY. "I said, ‘You know what? I'm on vacation, I'm taking this off.’” That's when a stranger approached and asked her to cover up.

“I was kind of stunned,” she admitted. Instead of retorting, she came up with something even better: a hilarious response. She covered her head with the blanket and left her breast exposed while her baby continued to nurse. Touché! “I just put it over my head. I don't know why," she said. "It wasn't like a salacious fight or anything. That was just my response. I had no words so I thought, I'll just cover my head instead." Her husband took the picture of his wife "covered up" and the image has since gone viral. One of her friends shared it on her page and people applauded the mother's response.

One user commented: You should be able to breastfeed whenever or wherever you are. It's natural and an important part of bonding with baby. Like the scarf by the way. Another wrote: Good one lady you have a right to feed your baby it doesn't matter where you are. Another mom pointed out: Why do people think all moms get a choice? With my daughter she flat out refused to be covered. Even by a light cloth. She would freak the fuck out u til she projectile vomited. No amount of trying would get her use to it. And you can’t exactly reason with an infant.

Dudley said she tries to cover up whenever she feeds her baby in public and it still is something that feels new to her. She's also a mom to twin boys and even though she breastfed her older boys for a year, “it was impossible to do both at the same time when we were out so I never had this problem. With my little one, it’s so much easier to nurse out in public,” she said. The mom has received a little backlash but it's mostly been supportive, especially from Europeans. “I just can't believe it. It's wild to me,” she said. “If there's a larger message to this, it’s just be supportive.” She also got a lot of advice online where some people even suggested she nurse in the bathroom, but that was an idea she quickly dismissed. “That's not very hygienic,” she said. It's strange how women are judged for doing a natural thing. Why not just look away if it makes you uncomfortable? Dudley hopes her story provides positivity and a source of inspiration to other nursing moms. “I hope the momentum keeps growing. Let's be supportive of women who want to nurse in public, with or without a cover," she said. "I mean, just do your thing. It's not hurting anyone."
