“The past 11½ years with Luke were the happiest years of my life, and I am grateful to have had that time with him,” his fiancé said. Now, memories are all that his family and friends can hold on to.
It wasn't about missing an actor or a talented performer. It was about losing a genuinely kind and compassionate man who could effortlessly make a connection with anybody he met. That's what made the news of Luke Perry's death so devastating.
Everyone who knew him was struck with unbearable grief after he passed away from a massive stroke at the age of 52 in March 2019, according to the Daily Mail. He was the irresistible heartthrob on the hit show, Beverly Hills, 90210, and all his co-stars were crushed by his death but decided to come together to honor him by rebooting the show. But through it all, they missed their dear friend and co-star because he was the glue that kept them all together.
"The toughest part is being without Luke because he was the one cast member who held everyone together, the one that had no drama with anyone," a source told ET. "Everyone just loved him. The cast keeps talking about all their wonderful memories of Luke. They are trying to focus on the fun times they enjoyed on set with him."
Not only was the cast happy to keep Luke Perry's memory alive, but rebooting the show also gave them a chance to talk about the wonderful man he was because nobody else would understand what his loss meant to them. His death, "drew us all together like a magnet," his co-star Jennie Garth said, according to Page Six.
"We were all together when it happened," said Tori Spelling "We just all wanted to be together and talk to only each other. Our families couldn’t understand. Our friends outside of ‘90210’ couldn’t understand."
Anybody who met Luke Perry couldn't resist the charm he had. Michael O’Neil, a staffer of the former president described him as a man with 'zero ego', according to Fox 8. While Shannen Doherty, his co-star told People,"Luke was a smart, quiet, humble and complex man with a heart of gold and never-ending well of integrity and love."
Actor Colin Hanks was on a plane with him and when a few kids were crying and screaming while the plane was in the air, Luke Perry went up to them, blew balloons, tied them up for the kids, and calmed them down. "He tells me he always flies with a couple of balloons for that very reason, to give to screaming kids..." Colin Hanks wrote on Instagram. "Guy seemed like a true gent. Gone way too damn soon."
His children were always his priority and he made himself available for them. "Luke was a super great, very hands-on dad," a source said. "He was always attending his kids’ school and after-school functions when they were younger. He loved just hanging out with them and being present. He was so proud of everything they accomplished."
Even in his love life, he was a true gentleman who ensured that the end of his marriage with Minnie Sharp didn't mean it was the end of their relationship. On his deathbed, he had his ex-wife as well as his fiancé at the time, Wendy Madison Bauer next to him. Luke Perry was able to give his fiancé the happiest years of her life and Wendy Madison Bauer will never forget the memories he gave her.
“The past 11½ years with Luke were the happiest years of my life, and I am grateful to have had that time with him,” she said. “I also want to thank his children, family, and friends for their love and support. We have found comfort in one another and in the knowledge that our lives were touched by an extraordinary man. He will be dearly missed.”
For Luke Perry, his family was everything and no amount of television success and fame compared to the joy that fatherhood gave him. "Luke loved his family. He raved about his kids and how proud he was of them. He showed me videos of the often," said Shannen Doherty. "They were his heart and for him, his biggest accomplishment."
It's been months since Luke Perry passed away, but even after years, people will still remember him fondly and miss him dearly for the many things that made him a gentleman. Ian Ziering tweeted, "I will forever bask in the loving memories we’ve shared over the last thirty years," while Shannen Doherty said, "I will miss him every day. Every minute. Every second."
