Howard and Laura Serena may have spent a lifetime together but their love and affection for each other is everlasting.
Love has no expiry date. It does not matter if you are old or young, if you truly love a person, he or she will always be special to you. This might sound like a line from a fantasy romance novel to some of you. But, some incidents will prove to you that it is far from just fantasy. The story of Howard and Laura Serena is one such tale.
According to Time, the couple had been happily married for 73 years with nine children and 18 grandchildren. In spite of being with each other for so long, the couple is still in love with each other. 93-year-old Laura suffered from dementia and was given one week to live and was admitted to a hospice facility. When she heard her husband was at the facility, she asked if she could hold him. Realizing his wife wanted to hold him, he readily moved his wheelchair close to her, hoping to make her wish come true. With support from others, he stood by the bed of his wife and did the most beautiful thing.
A video posted of the couple showed 92-year-old Howard singing to his dear wife. The loving husband is seen kissing his wife's hand and telling her that he was always her sweetheart. He tells her, "I am was your best love(sic)." Laura readily agrees as he laughs at her response. The two then go on to say they love each other. Then Howard breaks into their favorite love song — You'll Never Know by Rosemary Clooney and Harry James, with their family in the background.
He caresses her face gently and continues singing while looking lovingly at his wife. Laura is seen saying, "he likes me," making the others laugh. The heartwarming video was posted by their granddaughter Erin Solari on Youtube. She wrote, "Howard (Grandpa) is singing to her their love song, the song that comforted her when he went away to fight in World War II. At family gatherings, it was not uncommon for the two of them to sing this song together, each taking a verse and serenading the other. In fact, after fifty years of marriage, they renewed their vows and performed this song as a duet for the entire family at the reception." She even told viewers that her grandmother was visually impaired and could only see shadows and light. She stated, "She cannot see much of anything but shadows and light. That doesn’t stop her from looking deep into her love’s eyes."
The video immediately caught the attention of people all across the internet. That romance and true affection teared up some and brought cheer to others. The granddaughter thanked viewers for their kind words and told them that Laura was spending her remaining days at home with the family. "Our family along with the wonderful people from hospice are taking care of her and making sure she remains as pain-free and comfortable as possible while she prepares for her nearing departure. We all thank you so much for the love and kind words," wrote Erin.
However, just days after the video was recorded Howard left his love behind. According to ABC News, he passed away on 15 May 2016. Five days later, Laura too joined her husband in a land afar. She passed away on 20 May 2016. Hopefully, they are continuing their eternal love story wherever they are, happy in each other's arms.
