He's had to overcome a number of personal battles before he was finally able to take Christine Baumgartner as his wife. And when they were finally tying the knot, Kevin Costner had only one wish. "He really wanted Christine to have a wedding she’ll remember for the rest of her life,” said the wedding planner who took care of their wedding in 2004. That day, not only did the actor make sure it was a wedding his lady love would remember for a lifetime, but he also gave her the beginning to what would grow into a wonderful and fulfilling marriage.
In 1994, Kevin Costner went through a painful divorce, and ever since then, he's either remained alone or in brief relationships that never quite worked. When he wasn't at a stage where he was ready to love someone wholeheartedly, he met Christine Baumgartner on a golf course. The couple started dating in 1999. “When I met Christine, I wasn’t prepared to be in love again,” said Kevin Costner, as reported by Hooch. But he could see how things in his life were falling into place after she became a part of it.
Even though their relationship was wonderful, Kevin Costner still wasn't ready to get married because they had different opinions when it came to children. “Fear kept me from marrying Christine. [She] wanted a child, but I was afraid I couldn’t be an effective father." the actor had said.
Kevin Costner had already had four children from his past relationships at the time and felt like he wasn't ready to have more, which led to their brief breakup in 2002, according to Country Living.
"She said, 'I’m going to wait for you, but not long. When you come to your senses, come back to me'," he told Parade. "And I did."
"After dating for four years, I woke up and thought, ‘Am I going to lose a beautiful woman who is willing to be with me to my very last breath because I am afraid to say yes to a child?’ That’s all it took.”
They got married in 2004 at Costner's scenic ranch and their family and friends could see just how much they were meant to be together. “It was intimate, very romantic and beautiful,” said one of the guests, according to People. “The highlight for me was the look Kevin had as he watched Christine walk toward him. They’re madly in love and it showed.”
After they welcomed children of their own, Kevin Costner proved just how a dedicated husband and father he is to his family. It's been almost 15 years since he exchanged wedding vows, but there isn't a single day where Kevin Costner doesn't work hard to keep his wife and kids happy.
In his mid-60s now, "playing hard" for his family gives him reason to love life even more, and it gives Christine Baumgartner more reason to love him more and more each day. “I try to stay relevant because I have three kids I play with. I play hard and I try to take care of myself. I have a beautiful wife and I don’t want her to look anywhere else," he said, according to Mirror. “I want to be something for her. I want to stay interested in life.”
When he was asked about the secret to their marriage, he said, "Maybe it’s the ability to say you’re sorry. I know that sounds so simple. If you’re willing to tell somebody that you love them, are you also willing to say you’re sorry? You need to, even when you think you’re in the right."
When it's necessary, he's able to put his partner's feelings before his own. They've loved and respected each other since their relationship started about twenty years ago, and that's one thing that doesn't seem to have changed.
