John Travolta Remembers Talking About Death With His Son After His Wife Passed Away

John Travolta shares the discussion he had with his 10-year-old son about death, after his wife passed away due to breast cancer.

John Travolta's wife, Kelly Preston, 57, died of breast cancer in 2020 after fighting with a fatal illness for 2 years. He opens up about his conversation with his son Ben, 10, as he attempted to address the question of death with him.

In the latest episode of Kevin Hart's special, Hart to Heart, Travolta shared the conversation he had had with his son. "(Ben) said to me once, 'Because mom passed away, I'm afraid you're going to.'"

He added, "I said, 'Well, it's a very different thing.' And I went through the differences about my longevity and her limited life. I said, 'But you know, Ben, you always love the truth and I'm going to tell you the truth about life. Nobody knows when they're gonna go or when they're going to stay.'"

This was not the first time Travolta was grieving about losing a loved one. Preston and Travolta also suffered a great loss when they lost their eldest son Jett in January 2000. He died after suffering a seizure while on a family vacation in the Bahamas, per USA Today.

Addressing his brother's death, Travolta recalls talking to Ben, "Your brother [Jett] left at 16. Too young. Your mother left at 57. That was too young. But who's to say? I could die tomorrow. You could. Anybody can." He addresses the unfortunate loss the child has suffered by losing his mother and says, "So let's look at it like it's part of life. You don't know exactly. You just do your best at trying to live the longest you can." He hopes Ben understands how life is very temporary and death is inevitable.

Travolta and Preston were married for 29 years and also have a daughter Ella, 21 apart from Ben and their late son, Jett. Ben was born in 2010, a year after his brother died and he gave his parents a new hope and happiness. Travolta spoke to PEOPLE in 2011 saying, "He's (Ben) given the house a renewed spirit and purpose." Travolta said to Hart that he informed his kid that he felt "eternally 21" when Ben asked him whether he could recall things that happened decades ago during an honest talk with his son. "I said, 'Yeah.' He said, 'Does 30 years ago seem like a long time?' I said, 'Yeah.' He said, 'Don't you think you have 30 more years in your life to live?' I said, 'Yeah, I do. I have at least 30 more years.' He said, 'What's wrong with that?'" Travolta explained. "This is a 10-year-old telling me that! It changed my viewpoint."

The family is mourning the loss of their mother for a year now. This year on Mother's Day, Travolta shared a heartfelt picture with Ella, Ben, and Kelly. He wrote, "Dearest Kelly, you brought into my life three of the most wonderful children I have ever known. Thank you. We love and miss you."
