Joe Biden Set To Become 46th President of the United States | He Garners 73 Million Votes Setting New Record In US History

Trump claimed victory in many states even before the voting was completed.

US presidential elections have come to an end with Joe Biden garnering a majority of the electoral votes. The historic win comes after days of anticipation and uncertainty.

Joe Biden, who spent eight years in the White House as Vice President to President Barack Obama, garnered 73 million votes so far. This sets a new record of the highest ever vote count in US history.  At the age of 78, he will be the oldest president in American history, a record previously held by the man he has now defeated, Donald Trump, who is 74.

He went past the 270-requirement to win the presidency, with Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania playing a pivotal role in this historic election. Kamala Harris, the first Black American of Indian origin, will serve as the Vice President.

Though Biden was leading the polls, the former Vice President refrained from claiming victory. Instead, he stated he was going to wait till the counting was completed in all states. However, he said he was encouraged by the extraordinary turnout in the elections. "Here, the people rule. Power can't be taken or asserted," said Biden, according to CNN. He added, "No one’s going to take our democracy away from us — not now, not ever," according to AP News.

Meanwhile, Trump failed to appear in public after claiming a false victory in the early hours of November 4, 2020. “Frankly, we did win the election," claimed Trump with millions of ballots still left to be counted, according to Forbes. He said that he had "clearly" won in Georgia and North Carolina. He also claimed he was on track to win Pennsylvania.

He stated, "This is a fraud on the American public. This is an embarrassment for our country. As far as I’m concerned, we already have won it.” Trump's tweet suggesting his opponents “are trying to STEAL the Election" was flagged as misinformation by Twitter and Facebook

He even filed lawsuits against Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Georgia after he fell behind Biden in the electoral race. However, the jury dismissed the claims of election fraud.

“What makes these charades especially pathetic is that while Trump is demanding recounts in places he has already lost, he’s simultaneously engaged in fruitless attempts to halt the counting of votes in other states in which he’s on the road to defeat,” said Biden's campaign spokesman Andrew Bates, according to AP News. Trump's false claims and accusations were condemned by Republicans as well.

Due to the pandemic, over 80 million Americans chose to vote by mail or early in person. Biden has been urging people to remain calm with his motto being "Keep the Faith."

About 12 hours before the results were out, he called for unity urging people to think of the bigger picture, according to CBS. "The purpose of our politics isn't to wage total and unrelenting war. It's to solve problems," said the Democratic candidate who will replace President Trump in the White House soon.
