When it comes to your physical health, there's a diagnosis that will tell you exactly what's wrong and what can be done to fix it. But the same cannot be said for our emotional and mental health. There are times when we've had no control of the way we felt, and this is true for all, regardless of your profession Celebrities also undergo similar circumstances in life. They are also humans who have had their set of high and low points in life. Recently, 81-year old veteran actress Jane Fonda opened up about suffering a "nervous breakdown."
According to Independent, the two-time Academy winner revealed that she had a nervous breakdown while shooting the first season of Netflix series Grace and Frankie. In a recent interview, the actress spoke about how the show had impacted her mental health.
“I had a nervous breakdown during the first season and I discovered it’s because the very first episode our husbands tell us that they are going to leave us after 40 years and marry each other and that triggered abandonment,” Fonda said when she spoke about playing the character of Grace Hanson.
Grace and Frankie is a comedy series that talks about the tale of two best friends whose husbands leave them after years of marriage to date each other. Fonda openly admitted that she didn't imagine that a comedy series would have such a big impact on her. “It was a big trigger, and I didn’t realize that a character in a comedy could actually trigger something so profound,” she said.
The actress added that this realization enabled her to love her character. However, she did not want to be like her character Grace because they already had too much in common.
Though it is not clear what the actress points to abandonment, it may be references to her three failed marriages. The actress, who was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2017 for her onscreen performance as Grace, said that she had to go back to therapy after the first season. Fonda also stated that she took Prozac, an antidepressant.
The 'Grace and Frankie' star also talked about the cultural importance of her character. “[Our] culture doesn’t like people with wrinkles to be talking about sex. And kids don’t like to think about their parents doing it, either. But the fastest-growing demographic in the world are older women, and a lot of them are doing it very pleasurably.” Fonda has entertained the public throughout the five seasons of the Netflix series.
In the past, the actress had revealed her struggles with her own health. She had talked about her problems with poor body image and had admitted to having multiple plastic surgeries.
