A GoFundMe page also stated that "their house was completely destroyed" and "the family lost absolutely everything in the fire."
Ray Lucas and his girlfriend Shi’Ann Brown had just stepped out for a quick gas station run. The 23-year-old parents to twin girls came back in 15 minutes only to see that their home was completely engulfed in flames on Saturday morning. The Michigan dad ran inside to rescue his 18-month-old twin daughters Milan and Malaysia who were asleep in the basement. "I just knew I had to get my babies out," he told Fox 2. "That's what went through my mind." The heroic father dashed into the burning home "without hesitation" to retrieve the baby girls from the basement. "You really couldn't see your hand in front of your face — I really only found my babies due to my memory, just knowing where they were and knowing how to get to them — just from having that same route."
The dad's quick thinking definitely did end up saving his children's lives. The fire however had left its mark on the family and their home. Malaysia was left with severe burns and had to spend some time in the ICU before being released back to her family shortly after. Milan was also in the ICU suffering from some smoke inhalation. A GoFundMe page explained "Their house was completely destroyed. The family LOST ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING IN THE FIRE. The father, Ray is now worried because he cannot go back to work due to the extent of his injuries." The page is raising funds for the family, stating: Please help us to Bless this young man, the babies and their mother Shi’Ann so that they may secure a new home, and restore and furnish a new home environment for the family to live. With such things like furniture, baby beds and baby furniture, in addition to diapers and clothing for both of the twin babies and clothing for the baby’s mother and the father. Funds are also needed to go towards medical bills and expenses. Shi’Ann had valuable family Heirlooms that can never be replaced that were also lost in the fire.
Lucas himself has been through a lot. His injuries included second and third-degree burns on his body, smoke inhalation, and temporary loss of sight. “I was temporarily blind for three days and they said it was a miracle I could see,” he told reporters. “I’ve got burns on my arms, but for the most part, everyone is still here.” The cause of the fire remains unknown. "If anybody can support that'll be great," he added. The GoFundMe page has so far raised $209,452 raised of its $40,000 goal. Both the babies have since left the hospital and are recovering, according to a Facebook post by their mom Shi’Ann Brown. She wrote: These last couple days have been crazy but I just wanted to thank everybody for their support, whether it was prayers, money, clothes, anything, I’m truly grateful My babies were discharged from the hospital yesterday & their Dad was also discharged. We are now at a hotel & we’re all just working on recovering. Right now my family & I are looking for a home, so if anyone has any information on housing/resources please let me know. Any clothes, donations, and even just prayers are still truly appreciated.
