The family members couldn’t believe that she died at the hands of the very man she had loved and stayed loyal to for over nine years.
A heartbroken family is mourning the loss of Erica Tate, a mother to four young boys. Tate was shot to death at a North Villere apartment in New Orleans on January 8. Later that day, the father of the four children was arrested for the murder, WWLTV reported.
The signs were always there, the family allegedly said. Todd Larche, Tate’s uncle and godfather described the 30-year-old as being radiant, kind, and always doing the best for those she loved, “She inherited a smile that would radiate a room,” he was quoted as saying by the outlet. “Her smile would brighten up a room,” he added before saying that she was extremely loyal to a fault.
The family members couldn’t believe that she died at the hands of the very man she had loved and stayed loyal to for over nine years. The man, Cedric Powell claims he did it in self-defense but the family says otherwise.
“Her sons were her world. She put them first. Even their dad she loved him, she loved him unconditionally,” Shari Larche, Erica’s mother was quoted as saying. “Because of that unconditional love and not really knowing her true self-worth, she sacrificed who she was so someone else could be happy,” she said as the relationship between Erica and Powell grew, she saw a shift in her daughters’ behavior. “I had begun to see less and less of my daughter. It was more of them as a unit as a family unit,” says Larche. “It was more like a controlling relationship. She would do what she had to do to keep peace in her home.”
Larche felt something was terribly wrong when Powell unexpectedly dropped all four kids off at her house that day. “I knew something was off, something was wrong. So I had a friend to come sit with the grandkids while I went to the apartment to look for my daughter, and I found her,” Larche said.
It was then that Larche found out her daughter was shot to death in the apartment she shared with Powell.
Tate’s four little sons, the youngest just 10-months-old, are now left without their beloved mother while their father faces second-degree murder charges. Powell is now being held on a $500,000 bond.
“They know their mom won't be coming back. She's in heaven. They know they won't see their dad for a while,” Larche said. Larche is now left to raise her four young grandchildren as she mourns the loss of her daughter. “She was a blessing. I loved my baby girl. She loved her children. She loved life. She just didn't get a chance to live it to its fullest,” she said. The family has now set up a Go-Fund-Me account which has already raised over $33,000, all of which will go towards Tate’s four children.
