Looking back at the family they built together, Stacey Weitzman said, "The most wonderful thing is to really be able to grow with someone."
Many Hollywood couples are known for their long divorce and custody battles. However, there are a few couples in the industry who prove it is possible for celebrity marriages to last forever. Henry Winkler and his wife of 42 years, Stacey Weitzman are one such couple. The man who is well known for playing The Fonz aka Fonzie in the Happy Days has had the joy of sharing his professional success with his wife by his side for decades.
According to Closer Weekly, the couple met each other at a clothing store in Los Angeles. Winkler was smitten by Weitzman at the very first sight. He knew he wanted to ask the woman out on a date, according to Fox News.
Recalling their first meeting, Winkler stated, "She was wearing purple parachute pants and she had red hair and without her ever saying a word, I thought, ‘Whoa, beautiful woman standing in front of me,'" according to People.
However, Winkler did not ask her out immediately. "I came back to the store the next week and was there. And within 10 minutes, I learned how strong she is," said the Barry actor.
He continued, "I said, ‘Would you like to go for a soda? I just have to make a quick stop to buy a wedding gift.’ And she said, ‘I am not a gift service!’ But then she changed her mind and we went across the street and had ginger ales."
That date was the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Within weeks, Weitzman moved in with the actor along with her 4-year-old son. Their relationship moved fast but they waited for two years before tying the knot. Weitzman stood by her husband and supported him as he navigated through the industry to establish his spot.
Despite his hectic schedule at work, Winkler too found time to be there for his wife and their children. According to the New York Times, Winkler helped her battle cancer. Though she went into remission, she was rediagnosed with the illness just a few years later. With no options available, Weitzman was forced to undergo a double mastectomy.
Looking back at the family they built together, Weitzman stated, "The most wonderful thing is to really be able to grow with someone. We’re not the same people we were when we got married…. It does take work. There are glitches in the road, and you get a little off-kilter, but if you have the ability and the stick-to-itiveness based on love, then your friendship and your relationship only get better.”
The couple who share two children and many grandchildren also stated that they enjoy doing a lot of things together. “We enjoy fly fishing together. We enjoy grandchildren together. We enjoy going to the movies together. We truly enjoy each other every day," added Winkler. The duo also explained how they enjoyed being grandparents.
"And as a grandparent, you always have a fall guy. 'You want a hot fudge sundae? Let’s call mom!’ But they work us so hard," said Weitzman. Winkler admitted his "favorite part" was watching their grandkids.
Undoubtedly, Winkler and his wife share a beautiful love together. "I’m thrilled to be on this earth, I’m thrilled with my family and I’m thrilled to be doing great work," said the actor.
