During an interview in 2005, the 'Dark Knight' star expressed the joys of fatherhood: "Matilda is adorable, and beautifully observant and wise."
The world devastatingly said goodbye to the legendary Joker-playing actor on January 22, 2008. Even though it has been more than thirteen years since he was found lifeless in his Manhattan apartment, no one could forget him because the 28-year-old was truly one of a kind. According to History, Hollywood mourned his untimely demise which was caused after he ingested a combination of prescription drugs and sleeping pills. Starting his career as a child actor, he received acclamation for his role in the Academy Award-nominated movie Brokeback Mountain (2005). He made the audience swoon with his performance in the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.
Despite his tremendous success on-screen, he may have been suffering in his personal life. Although why he chose to take his life remains unknown, there's one thing we are sure of—he loved his beautiful daughter Matilda unconditionally. Born on October 28, 2005, Matilda Rose Ledge was just two when her father passed away. She is also the daughter of actress Michelle Williams, who met Ledger on the sets of Brokeback Mountain before they started dating. During an interview with In Touch in 2005, the Dark Knight star expressed the joys of fatherhood. "Matilda is adorable, and beautifully observant and wise," he said.
"Michelle and I love her so much. Becoming a father exceeds all my expectations. It's the most remarkable experience I've ever had, it's marvelous," added the actor. Gerry Grennell, Ledger's dialect coach and friend who lived and worked with the star while he was shooting The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus towards the end of his life, revealed that the actor was "exhausted, emotionally and physically," as he was battling a pneumonia-like illness. "He missed his girl, he missed his family, he missed his little girl — he desperately wanted to see her and hold her and play with her," said Grennell according to PEOPLE. "He was desperately unhappy, desperately sad
The pair mutually ended their three-year relationship in 2007 but remained friends until Ledger's tragic death. At the time, Matilda was very young and her mother made sure that she was kept out of the public eye. Then in November 2016, Williams opened up about raising Matilda without her father during a rare interview. "In all honesty, for pretty much everything else, I feel like I'm a believer in not fighting circumstances, accepting where you are and where you've been. In pretty much all senses but one," she said. "I would be able to go totally down that line of thinking were it not for Matilda not having her dad. You know, that's just something that doesn't... I mean, it just won't ever be right."
Although Williams tried her best to keep her daughter from the limelight, her pictures eventually began circulating online a few years back. "She's got his energy," Ledger's father, Kim, told Australia's Channel 10 in 2015, according to ET Online. "Heath never slept from when he was two and Matilda's like that. She's just got this ball of energy and she radiates this little aura." The late actor's sister Kate also opened up about how much Matilda resembles her handsome father. "Now everything she does… the way she rides a skateboard… reminds me of Heath," she said according to Yahoo! News. "I’m really happy I’m at a stage I can see Matilda and be happy, and feel her daddy’s energy through her." Now, Matilda has grown up to be a wonderful 15-year-old girl and we hope she reached great heights in her career just like her talented father.
