Queen Elizebath thanked the public for their througtful wishes and comforting words.
Queen Elizebath marked her 95th birthday on April 21, 2021, just days after she lost Prince Philip, her husband of more than 70 years.
The official Instagram account of the royal family posted a picture of the Queen, wishing her on her milestone birthday. The post stated, "Today is The Queen’s 95th birthday. The Queen was born at 2.40am on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London. She was the first child of The Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth." It further stated, "This year Her Majesty remains at Windsor Castle, during a period of Royal Mourning following the death of The Duke of Edinburgh." The post was accompanied by a smiling picture of the Queen in a burgundy ensemble at a royal engagemnet, contrary to the royal tradition of sharing new portraits on birthdays.
Many commented on the post and wished the Queen on her special day, amid the tragic loss. Prince Charles and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also wished the Queen by sharing the same post.
Honouring the death of her husband, the Queen's birthday was a subdued affair without the traditional gun salute ceremony. According to People, the royal matriach, who is observing a a two-week mourning period spent her birthday privately at Windsor Castle, surrounded by her her loyal staff and her three dogs.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail had previously reported that the monarch is expected to have visits from her family members. However, it is not clear if the family paid visits to Her Royal Highness on her special day.
However, the Queen released a message to the public, thanking them for their wishes and comforting messages. She wrote, "I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate. While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world."
Further, she wrote, "My family and I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days. We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life," according to Harpers Bazaar.
