"The thought that every moment could be fatal, it drives me crazy," were the last words that the mother wrote on a blog.
For parents to watch their child slowly inch closer towards death, for them to helplessly stand by as their little one fights against a life-threatening disease and not be able to do anything can push them to the point out desperation. A mother and father from Romania lost their will to live while they were reeling under the grief over the death of their son.
Nicu Arava and his wife Vali had watched their son, Cristian struggle with cancer ever since he was a toddler. It wasn't just a fight for Cristian Dimitris Arava alone. As they watched their son battle for life against brain tumor, his parents felt like it was a fight that they were very much a part of as well.
"I felt like I was dying myself when I heard the diagnosis," the heartbroken mother said in a blog that was written about seven years ago, acording to the Daily Mail. "I can't express the pain that two parents feel when finding such terrible news about their child. He was only two years old."
As the years went by, Cristian's health began taking a turn for the worse. The parents were told by his doctors that the tumor had further developed and they wouldn't be able to perform a surgery on him.
"Our only hope that Cristian is a lucky child and the tumour will stop growing is now shattered," said the last words on the blog, put up by Vali. "The thought that every moment could be fatal, it drives me crazy."
By the age of nine, Cristian's brain tumor brought his life to an end, leaving his parents with the weight of unbearable grief.
The parents, who were both the age of 46, couldn't bear to see their family broken and wanted nothing more than to be with their boy, wherever he was. Nicu and Vali decided to end their lives so that they could be reunited with their son, and be together as a family.
The couple put their grief and their final farewell message into a 13-page letter. They left the letter and their entire lives behind to follow their son. Later, it was their neighbors who found the couple's bodies in their apartment in Constanta, Romania, as reported by Mirror. The mother was found covered in a blanket, lying next to her son's body while the father's body was found in the kitchen.
Sadic Zafer, the prosecutor, said that Vali hung herself first and later, her body was placed next to Cristian.
The parents, crushed over the death of their son, did not want to live in a world that their son was no longer a part of. And so, they made the heartbreaking decision to reuinte with him in heaven.
Losing someone you love to something as ruthless, and physically and emotionally taxing as cancer can leave you with grief that's hard to put into words. The decision to end their lives over the death of their child might seem extreme to many, but there were some who said they could relate to the grief the devastated parents must have felt.
