After watching his son spend the first and only weeks of his life attached to a machine in the NICU, the heartbroken father had to watch his son pass away, too.
Raising a family with the love of his life, who had been in his life since high school, it was all Matt Accurso would have imagined. And when they got the news that Lauren was pregnant with a baby boy, their picture-perfect family would finally be complete, or so they thought. The dream came to an abrupt end when the father of three little girls had to watch his high school sweetheart pass away due to complications while she gave birth to their son, according to Today.
Lauren and Matt spent 20 years of their lives by each other and were parents to three little girls, Ali Rose, Naomi Belle, and Layne Louise. And the anticipation of having a son had filled the Accurso home with so much excitement and anticipation. “There was so much excitement because after three girls, they were having a boy,” said the couple’s pastor, Matt McCloghry.
But nothing could have stopped what happened during baby Matthew's birth. "Our dear Lauren has gone home to be with Jesus. There are no words to describe the pain and heartbreak felt by so many." said their GoFundMe page. "Lauren passed away while in childbirth from what has been determined so far to be an unpreventable and very rare medical emergency."
As Matt was grieving for his wife and the mother of his four children, he also had to watch his baby boy fight for life whilst being attached to tubes and machines. Because of the complications from the birth, baby Matthew suffered a significant amount of brain injury, where his tiny body was struggling with cognitive function and development.
"Upon hearing this news, My first reaction as Matthew's daddy was to sweep my sweet boy up and carry him as far away from machines, medications, life support and hospital smells as I could," Matt said. "I wanted to whisk him away to our family condo on the beach and let the healing kisses of his sisters, grandmas and cousins cleanse his little body of all his infirmities, but as life sometimes does, I was brought back down to the reality that my only son, the sweet boy that my wife so diligently and lovingly carried for 9 months is in a situation that daddy could not fix."
Sitting helplessly by his son's side while he was attached to machines, Matt tried to hold on to whatever hope was left. "The ONLY hope in all of this could only come from his heavenly daddy who placed breathe in Matthews lungs from the very beginning," the father said.
It was the time when Matt started wondering about miracles; having lost his wife and the thought of losing his son, too, was a heavy weight to carry.
"Some will hear our story and think, what an awful tragedy. Some will think, where is God when we need him? Some will say, see, miracles don’t happen. But do you want the truth? Matthew is a living miracle," Matt said. He firmly believes that his son was a "living miracle" who was born into the chaos of doctors trying to save his mother's life and his own life.
"Matthew then defied all odds and opened his eyes, breathed on his own, pumped blood through his strong heart, moved his limbs without rigidity and even made coo noises," Matt said. His body slowly began to function, and he even gripped my finger when from what we were told, that should have been impossible."
"They really feel like they have been able to hold onto a miracle, and baby Matthew is a miracle," pastor McCloghry said. "They are really seeing this from heaven's perspective. The name Matthew means 'gift of God.' They are choosing to see him as a true gift."
After watching his son spend the first and only weeks of his life attached to a machine in the NICU, the heartbroken father had to watch his son pass away, too. He finds his peace is recognizing the miracles in his life — having made treasured memories with his soulmate and spending those precious moments with his son, even if it was for a short while. "My miracle was having my soul mate by my side for almost 20 years and then being so blessed to give her 4 gorgeous babies," Matt said. "My miracle is holding my son for as many precious moments as possible and when the time comes, lifting him up to his mommy so that she can hold him for the first time in paradise."
Before the time came for them to say goodbye to Matthew, the father and his three daughters spent as much time as they could with him and shared some sweet moments together. Matt made sure that they "see Matthew off to his mommy and Heavenly Father" in the right way.
