The saturated fat present in coconut oil is known to lower the health risks associated with cholesterol by increasing the level of good cholesterol in the blood. It is not as bad for heart health when compared to animal-based food like cheese and steak, all of which contain trans fats. As per Healthline, a study done among 40 women showed that coconut oil reduced LDL or bad cholesterol and increased HDL compared to soybean oil.

Coconut oil is great for dental health. It can help fight Streptococcus mutans, a bacteria in the mouth known to cause dental plaque, tooth decay, and gum disease. According to a study, swishing the teeth with coconut oil for 10 minutes is as effective as an antiseptic mouthwash. This is also known as oil pulling and those who have tried it swear by it. It is also known to help reduce inflammation and plaque with inflamed gums.

As mentioned above, coconut oil has antibacterial properties and this is what allows it to fight infections. The oil was found to disrupt the growth of Clostridium difficile, an intestinal bacteria that causes severe diarrhea. Some study also showed that it can fight yeast infection due to the presence of lauric acid, the main fatty acid in the oil. However, it has not been proven that eating coconut would have the same effects.

Certain kinds of virgin coconut oil were found to be high in antioxidants which are known to reduce the oxidative stress thus lowering blood pressure. 6. Strengthens immune system

According to One Green Planet, coconut oil contains ingredients that will aid immunity. It contains anti-viral properties known as lauric acid and caprylic acid that fight infections. Coconut contains 50 percent of lauric acid which fights a variety of pathogens and viruses. They prevent a variety of diseases such as influenza, cytomegalovirus, HIV, listeria monocytogenes, etc. Consuming a teaspoon of coconut oil every day can help boost your immunity.

7. Improves memory

Regarding the effects of coconut oil on older people, based on a 2004 study published in the Journal of Neurobiology of Aging, found that it can help combat memory loss in seniors, according to My Senior Source. It found that the participants displayed an immediate improvement on a paragraph-recall memory test after taking coconut oil. The improved memory from the oil is known to last about 8 hours. However, taking 2-3 small doses of coconut oil each day can help make a huge difference. Too much coconut oil should be avoided as it causes diarrhea.
