Gwen Stefani's marraige was rocky from the start but she decided to forgive her husband and move on.
Marriage is built on trust and commitment but sometimes partners fail to remember this. Gwen Stefani's ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale is one of them. The musician cheated on Stefani and broke their marriage after 13 years of living together.
Stefani met the Bush lead singer at the age of 26. The country singer was instantly attracted to Rossdale. "When I met him and looked up at him, I was like, 'Whoa.' It was different. I was in quite a rebellious place because I was feeling really rejected...Somehow he got my phone number, and that was that. He stalked me, I think," recalled the artist, according to ENews. Soon, Stefani began dating the singer. After seven years of dating, the couple tied the knot. However, their marriage had a rocky start.
After their wedding in 2002, Rossdale came to know he was the biological father of his goddaughter. Her mother, Pearl Lowe had not disclosed the information and it came as a shock to both Stefani and Rossdale. It was then followed by an even more startling secret.
Courtney Love stated she had an affair with Rossdale while he was dating the singer, according to Cheat Sheet. Though the news was extremely humiliating for Stefani, she moved on with her marriage. However, Stefani was faced with more distressing challenges.
In 2015, the singer discovered that her husband was cheating on her again. This time it was with their children's nanny, Mindy Mann. Stefani could not take it any longer. She had forgiven him so many times. "It was the beginning of hell. My dreams were shattered. All I wanted my whole life was to have babies, be married, like what my parents have," said the mother of three.
Her life was nowhere close to the fairytales she heard and witnessed. Matters became worse when rumors spread about her husband leaving her at the hospital to meet the nanny. Though these allegations were confirmed by neither of them, Stefani filed for a divorce from her heartbreaking marriage. Apart from destroying her chance of having a happy family, Rossdale's affair and the consequent divorce also affected the way their children were to be brought up.
"It was so insane because not only did my family break up, but then my kids are taken away like half the time, so that was really like, 'What?! What did I do?'" said the singer, according to People.
Stefani was ashamed of the way her marriage turned out and worried about her kids more than herself. "As a famous person, you start to think, ‘I can’t say all that because I’ll embarrass them or hurt them in some way.’ And especially now because they can see everything and hear everything. But I’ve done nothing I’m ashamed of... Well, we all have a few things we’re ashamed of,” said the mother of three.
The emotional toll was so severe that she began questioning herself. Fortunately, before she could be swallowed by self-doubt, the singer met the man of her dreams. Stefani met Blake Shelton on The Voice. Having faced similar experiences, the singers bonded. They comforted each other and eventually fell in love through their shared experiences, according to ENews.
Meanwhile, Rossdale revealed his separation from Stefani was the most embarrassing moment in his life, according to Cosmopolitan. He also claimed that divorce was not something he wanted. Speaking to The Sun, he said, "[Divorce] was completely opposite to what I wanted. Really not…But here we are. Apart from death, I think divorce is one of the hardest, most painful things to go through," said the musician.
Stefani did not deserve to be in a marriage where she was not respected. Though she went through a lot of pain, she eventually found someone, who loved her.
