Internet Sensation, Grumpy Cat Who Spread Smiles For Years Has Passed Away

“She’s unstoppable. What she’s achieved in such a short time is unimaginable and absolutely mind-blowing," her proud owner said.

With a scowl on her face and the most relatable expression there is, Grumpy Cat turned into an internet sensation for the way she was able to lighten up someone's day. By starring in thousands of memes that were shared millions of times and reached the corners of the world, Grumpy Cat, whose original name was Tardar Sauce became one of the most famous furballs that the world couldn't help but love.

After years of putting a smile on people's face, Grumpy Cat passed away on May 14, 2019, peacefully cradled in the arms of her pet parent, Tabatha Bundesen. She was about 7 years old and couldn't cope with the effects of a recent urinary tract infection that she developed. Although she had the care of professionals and the love of her family, she couldn't make it.

On the surface, Tardar Sauce would seem to be like any other normal house pet. According to BBC, feline dwarfism and an underbite gave her the permanent grumpy expression that resonated with the entire world. Her face became synonymous with cranky days and grouchy moods, something that almost everyone can relate to, making Grumpy Cat one of the most iconic feline faces of the time. It all began in 2012 when Tabatha's brother Bryan shared a picture of Tardar Sauce on Reddit and she instantly became a hit.

It took Grumpy Cat just about seven years to accomplish what many humans have taken a lifetime to. She's starred in movies, books, appeared on talk shows, became the face of several products, and even hung out with famous celebrities.

In 2014, she came on the big screen in Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever.

On hearing the news of the cat's death, The actress, Aubrey Plaza, who was the voice for Grumpy Cat's character shared a post on Instagram and said, "my heart is broken. i will miss you grumpy cat. you were and will always be my true spirit animal...whether you like it or not."

Grumpy cat became so famous that she needed her own publicist as well. The best-selling book Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book and other published works like The Grumpy Guide to Life: Observations from Grumpy Cat are also credited to her name, according to CNN.

Her persona even became a part of brands like Friskies, Grumpy Cat Grumppuccino, and other products. Back in the year 2014, she earned a fortune of around 81 million dollars (£64million), not only making her one of the riches feline faces, but also making her worth more than a number of Hollywood stars as well. Grumpy Cat was able to earn more than actors like Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, Matt Damon, and Cameron Diaz, according to Express.

Growing into a global icon meant being able to put her family into a great position as well. “She’s unstoppable," said Tabatha Bundesen, her owner when she was 28. "What she’s achieved in such a short time is unimaginable and absolutely mind-blowing."

Thanks to Grumpy Cat, Tabatha was able to quit her job because people couldn't get enough of her cat. “I was able to quit my job as a waitress within days of her first appearance on social media and the phone simply hasn’t stopped ringing since," she said. "People take one look at her and fall in love, even if they actually think she’s pug ugly."

Although she's no more, Grumpy Cat was able to spread joy to people across the globe, and left behind thousands of memes and other things for people to laugh and remember her by.
