Former Foster Child Marks Her 7th Birthday By By Helping Other Foster Children In A Special Way

"She's always known she’s been adopted. She’s always had curiosity about foster children," the mother explained

Finding a loving home is a blessing for many children. 7-year-old Laila is not only thankful for getting a great family but is determined to do something for other children who weren't so fortunate, reported KCTV5

Laila, who will be turning 7 years old next week, says that she has decided to collect clothes for children in need on her birthday. This sentiment to 'give back' is quite remarkable for a girl of her age. For her adoptive mother, Coleen Burgess, this is nothing new, she always knew that Laila was very different when compared to other children her age. She explained the child's nature saying, "Laila is a very curious person. She's a very old soul and she's always known she’s been adopted. She’s always had a curiosity about foster children. Burgess had adopted the compassionate child out of foster care when she was barely eight months old. Prior to that, Burgess had already taken in 18 foster children for emergency placement, reported KCTV5

Over time Laila's interest to know what life is like for children in such situations grew.
"We talked about how those kids came, and when they came to the house, they had nothing. They just had the clothes on their back," Burgess said. That is probably what inspired Laila. She asked her mother if they could collect items to donate for children in need. "Just basic needs -- an outfit, pajamas, toothbrush and toothpaste, maybe a book or a stuffed animal," Burgess explained. The mother took her daughter's request seriously and put a word out on Facebook and within months they collected close to 200 hundred bags worth of items. It has been reported that so far, they have dropped off over 140 bags. Laila aspires to continue this work. "It was really an unbelievable amount of support that we got, and we couldn't have done it without all of those people," Burgess added, according to KCTV5
