84-YO Man With Cancer Marries His High School Sweetheart After 65 Years | "She Had Taken My Heart Back Again.”

Frederick and Florence got married within days of meeting each other again.

Life is full of unexpected turns and sometimes fate surprises people when they least expect it. Frederick Paul and Florence Harvey never thought they would meet and fall in love again after decades of being away from each other. Fortunately, they did and today, they are married.

According to CBC, Frederick and Florence were just teenagers when they fell in love. However, the couple was forced to part ways.  Frederick who went to Toronto in 1955 to walk his sister down the aisle on behalf of his father ended up staying there for a year.

When he returned to his hometown in Burin Peninsula, his lover Florence was no more there. "She was off to St. John's to take a teaching course for the summer school and we didn't get to meet again. After my vacation was over I came back to Toronto, and then we went our separate ways after that," recalled the elderly man.

Since then, Frederick and Florence led separate lives and had no contact with each other. However, on 15 February 2020, they spoke for the first time in years after Florence got Frederick's number from his brother.

"We both have brothers in a seniors' home in Marystown, so while I was visiting my brother, his brother was there," said Florence. She continued, "He said, 'I'm gonna give you Fred's number.'"

However, Florence did not make the call immediately. She waited for days. But when she came to know that his wife had died a day after Valentine's Day, Florence thought it was best to call him and offer her condolences.

During their call, the couple reminisced their childhood days. "It was a surprise — I didn't expect her to call. But as she said, you know, it's lonely when you lose your mate after 60 years," said the elderly man.

Soon, the couple spent hours on calls. They cherished their memories and even spoke of the time they courted each other.

"We started talking about our courtship years ago and all the things that we had done together, and before you know it, we were on the phone three to four hours at a time, four times a week," said Frederick.

After more than five months of conversations, Florence decided to come down to Ontario to meet Frederick.  Meanwhile, Frederick was diagnosed with cancer.

On 5 July 2020, Florence told Frederick that she was in Ontario at her son's house.

Knowing Florence was minutes away from him, Frederick could not wait to see her. Eventually, Florence's son drove her to see him.

Speaking of the moment he saw her, Frederick said, " I went around the car and Florence was getting out of the back seat, and I gave her a kiss on the cheek and held her hand and walked towards my house." He added, "I knew right away that she had taken my heart back again."

Florence too felt the same connection. Two days later, they decided to tie the knot. "We told our kids, you know, we're 81 and we're 84, and we don't have all that much time and we know what we want. And so we pushed ahead," said Frederick.

On 8 August 2020, the couple got married in an intimate ceremony. "We do everything together. We just love being here together. He's a very loving person, very caring. And I love every moment I spend with him," said Florence.

Frederick, on the other hand, referred to his wife as an "angel." He credited her love for motivating him to fight cancer. "I don't know where I would have went without her. I don't know if I would have gone through the chemotherapy, trying to get better from cancer if I hadn't had the incentive of a love in my life. I think she's wonderful. Just wonderful. And I love her very much," said Frederick.
