"My heart just broke...but it makes you realize what a beautiful bond we have with animal," said one person who saw the emotional video.
The relationship between a pet and the humans in their lives can run deep and the grief is immense when one loses the other. While we can talk about our grief with our loved ones, have a conversation with someone who might understand, and let them wipe our tears for us, we will never know what's going on in a pet's mind when they are mourning.
"It’s like that dog’s whole world is taken away," Kirstin McMillan said when she talked about a pet's grief, according to HuffPost.
When a woman named Sarah lost her grandmother, she saw their wolfdog, Wiley do something that he has never done before. Even though he couldn't put his grief into words us humans would understand, his actions showed just how emotional he felt at the grave of Sarah's grandmother, Gladys.
"Wiley, the wolfdog, crying at my grandmother's graveside at the cemetery," Sarah wrote when she uploaded the video on YouTube on April 24, 2013. "I can tell you that he has never done that before and hasn't done it since."
In the heartbreaking video, Wiley can be seen crying and shaking as he lays across the grave of Gladys, according to the Daily Mail. Sarah also added, "I may be anthropomorphosizing his actions but its how I'm choosing to deal with loss, so deal with it."
As Wiley is seen comforted in the video, a voice can be heard saying, "We miss her too".
Wiley was no ordinary dog. He was a therapy wolfdog who gave love and support through a program called Warriors and Wolves. "Wiley is a therapy wolf-dog who is used to help veterans returning from war with PTSD. He provides therapy and care through a program called Warriors and Wolves," Sarah went on to say.
The video of Wiley sobbing uncontrollably was also put up on the website of Lockwood Animal Rescue Center (LARC), a shelter in California that is best known for the care it provides to wolfdogs and horses.
Gladys was described as "a family member, and a supporter" of the shelter by the LARC website. Also showing how much Gladys meant to Wiley, the website added, "She will be forever missed, especially by Wiley."
A number of people who saw the video were moved by what they saw and their hearts went out to the visibly greif-stricken dog. "This is the saddest thing I've ever seen I just want to hug this dog and tell them that everything will be okay," said a comment on the video by Ellie.
Another comment read, "My heart just broke...but it makes you realize what a beautiful bond we have with animal."
In a matter of seconds, people were able to guess the kind of bond that Wiley and Gladys shared, seeing just how distraught her death left him.
Sharing their personal experience, another user commented, "i had to take my father's dog to his funeral. he started shedding tears and quivering, hyperventilating like this. even though it was closed casket, he knew who was in it. animals are intelligent, emotionally as well as mentally."
