6 Different Ways Your Partner Hugs You And What It Says About Their Feelings For You

If they no longer feel the spark, their hug will show it. If they feel deeply intimate with you, their hug will show it, too.

Every small and big way your partner touches you is a direct reflection of what's on their mind. The feelings they have for you or their current thoughts about the relationship unconsciously translates into the way they hug you. And if you pay close attention, here's what you can understand about what's going on in your partner's mind about you and the relationship.

1. When they hug you and then gently stroke your back

Gently stroking your back is a sign of affection and it shows that your partner cares a lot about you. "Having one's back caressed is a soothing touch that people often instinctively crave when they're down," said Janine Driver, president of the Body Language Institute, according to Cosmopolitan. When your partner rubs your lower back, it could also be an unconscious way of them showing that they desire it.

2. When they hug you and pat your upper back

Noticing that your partner hugs you and then pats you on your back could be a sign of your partner no longer feeling the romance. "This is how men hug their buddies; it's not romantic at all," said author, Christopher Blazina, Ph.D. "When a guy frequently embraces you like this, it means the relationship's not growing." If they are doing this over and over again, it could show that they no longer feel the spark in the relationship. However, sometimes, when you're about to take a risk or doing something out of your comfort zone, it could be their way of filling you with encouragement.

3. When they wrap their arms around your waist

Seeing that your partner's arms are encircled around your waist could show how your partner is feeling the strong connection with you. "A pelvis-to-pelvis embrace shows he'd like to merge with you sexually," said body-language expert Patti Wood. Wood also added that if their head is touching yours, "then he wants to merge his thoughts with yours as well." It shows how your partner is ready to be emotionally closer to you and take things to the next level.

4. When they hug only your upper body

You might not realize it when you both go for a hug. But if you notice that it's only your upper-bodies that are touching while you and your partner hug, it could show how you both are avoiding your lower bodies from touching each other, possibly because of a lack of sexual or emotional intimacy, as pointed out by changingminds.org. Also, if you see that it's only your shoulders touching while you're standing a foot apart with your waists bent, it could show how your partner is experiencing an emotional distance. This type of hug is mostly between acquaintances, as Everyday Health pointed out and it shows a lack of intimacy in your relationship.

5. When they sneak up on you and hug you from behind

A partner who's deeply in love would hug this way. "By covering your back, he's conveying that he wants to shelter you," said Wood. While it's a great sign that they feel at one with you, it could sometimes be a sign of something else. "That might mean he craves a closer connection but thinks you're unavailable," said Blazina. "He avoids hugging face-to-face because he's worried you're not into him." When your partner hugs you this way, it could also show how they miss something about you or they want more of you.

6. When they hug you and throw their arm around your neck

If you see that your partner places their arm around your neck while they hug you, sometimes with their head touching yours, it could be a sign of affection. It could be their way of seeking comfort from you. However, it could also show that your partner is trying to assert dominance over you. When you see that they are holding the hug for longer than usual, it could also be a sign of dominance.
