A "Rude" Sign Targeting Busy Parents At A Texas Daycare Attracts Mixed Reactions For All The Right Reasons

A sign outside a daycare telling parents to get off their phones has the internet debating whether it carries an important message or oversteps a line.

A sign posted outside a daycare in Hockley, Texas, has got the internet split on whether the sign is rude or a necessary reminder as it contained a rather strong message about parenting.

A parent picking up her child from the daycare was rather taken aback to be greeted by the sign at the door. Juliana Farris Mazurkewicz decided to take a picture of it and share it online. It was not long before the online brigade began voicing their opinion on it, and soon enough, the post went viral as parents debated whether the sign was appropriate or not, CNN reported.

The message on the sign called out parents for not paying enough attention to their children when they came to pick them up at the daycare. It read, "You are picking up your child! GET OFF YOUR PHONE!!!! Your child is happy to see you! Are you not happy to see your child?? We have seen children trying to hand their parents their work they completed and the parent is on the phone. We have heard a child say, 'Mommy, mommy, mommy...' and the parent is paying more attention to their phone than their own child. It is appalling. Get off your phone!!"

Mazurkewicz, who shared the message on Facebook, told CNN that she wasn't mad at the daycare about the sign. She said, "I was a bit shocked, but I didn't feel any negativity towards the daycare. I know that the staff has the best interests of the children in mind, even to the point where they are willing to offend the parent."

She never expected the post to go viral, but it became the center of a heated debate on the Internet. The picture has been shared a whopping 2 million times so far, managing to accumulate over 12,000 comments, and it has also received over 144,000 reactions.

Commenters were mixed in their opinion of the admonitory note, with some supporting the day care's stance and others calling the message insensitive and intrusive. Despite Juliana agreeing with the strong message in the sign, there were other parents who found it offensive.

Parents who supported the daycare's message wrote, "I’ve seen a lot of this myself, and it’s truly disheartening! Hopefully, parents take heed of the message!," "Not only does [the] child want [their] parents attention but the teacher or daycare provider may need to talk to the parent," "That is absolutely terrible! Pay attention to your child!," "When its time to give your child attention dedicate yourself to it. Do it with passion," and "How true I do hope parents take notice. Children first, phone later."

However, there were others who claimed that the daycare may have gone a bit too far, writing comments like, "A place of business should be professional and not try and school you on how to parent. You don't know a stranger's reason for being on their phone," "I am upset that this place of business felt they had the right to 'school' parents on how to interact with their kids. As a Mom, I have heard quite enough of other people's opinions on how to raise my kids," and "You people realize they're taking the kids home with them, right. Where they'll tend to homework, dinner, and all the important things. Perhaps worry about your own self and I'll worry about mine."
