Katie was raised by her mother and step-father. Though Katie seemed to have a friendly bond with David, their relationship hit a rough patch after David developed dementia in 2015.
Only a child will understand the real pain of being sidelined and rejected by their parent. Katie Cassidy, daughter of actor and singer David Cassidy, had to go through that same pain.
The actor who rose to fame through his 1970s musical TV series The Patridge Family became father to Katie when he was in a short term relationship with model Sherry Williams. However, the couple broke up and David welcomed another son named Beau with his third wife in 1991. Though he is a father of two, David only considered Beau to be his child.
Katie was looked after by her mother and her stepfather Richard Benedon. Though she did not spend a lot of time with her biological father as a child, Katie had a cordial and loving relationship with him in the beginning. "To be able to go to someone I’m genetically linked to, tell them anything, and know that they’re not going to judge me—it’s unbelievable," Katie told People in 2009.
Having followed her father's footsteps, Katie also received some advice from him on how to navigate through the industry. He apparently told her, "Do not work for money. Do not work for fame. Work for the work. And if you get a great role and they offer you nothing, take it."
Moreover, David claimed that he connected with Katie because he didn't raise her. He stated that it enabled him to give her an unbiased outlook on life. "Because I didn’t raise her, I didn’t have to parent her. I’m always here and totally nonjudgmental," said David.
Though they seemed to gel well together, their relationship hit a rough patch after David developed dementia in 2015. The actor who once spoke of his daughter with love had barely anything to say about her. Speaking of his relationship with his children, the actor revealed his bond with Beau was good despite his personal struggle with alcoholism.
"He’s just one of the best people you’ll ever meet in your life and it’s that that I’m proud of. He knows that I’m just a little off. Sometimes he cocks his head at me a little bit and goes, ‘Dad do you remember?’ and I say, ‘No, I know I do, I remember.’ He’ll give me reminders once in a while. He just turned 26. He’s such a beautiful person," said David, alluding to Beau, according to People.
However, when he was asked about his bond with Katie, the actor stated that they "never had" one. He continued, "I wasn’t her father. I was her biological father but I didn’t raise her. She has a completely different life. She’s very talented. It’s hard for me to even accept how old she is now, like 30.”
Though he said he was "proud" of her at the time, it was revealed that the actor did not leave anything for her out of his $150,000 assets, after his death. This hinted that the father-daughter duo did not have a good relationship. According to The Blast, David's will stated, "all references in this Trust to my ‘child or children’ are to Beau Devin Cassidy and such references shall not include Katie Evelyn Cassidy...It is my specific intent not to provide any benefits hereunder to Katherine Evelyn Cassidy and/or any descendant of Katherine Evelyn Cassidy.”
While details about the reasons behind the rift are still unknown, it was speculated that the lack of bonding between them during Katie's childhood was one of the factors. However, the death of David brought Katie and the rest of the family together. She stated, "Obviously, it’s been a tough year, that’s a given. But if anything, I have to say, I always try and look for some sort of silver lining in situations like that — and I guess it’s nice that it really brought my family together," according to People.
She continued, "Even though the loss of my father was hard, it really brought my uncles, myself, and my brother back together. I think that’s the silver lining.”
