David and Victoria Beckham are often viewed as the picture-perfect celebrity couple however, they say even their marriage has gone through some tough times.
A healthy and blissful relationship takes efforts regardless of how beautiful or handsome your partner is. It involves two invested partners who have unconditional love for each other. David and Victoria Beckham are such a couple. The duo, who are the epitome of glamour and style ever since they became a couple, have been together for 22 years surviving through rumors and thriving as a powerful unit.
The first meeting of the Hollywood power couple goes back to the year 1997 when Victoria was already a star as part of the pop band Spice Girls, and David was a barely known footballer, an upcoming player at the Manchester United Club.
Victoria's Beckham's letter to her 18-year-old self, published in the British Vogue, reveals just how fresh and young the initial days of their relationship was, "While the other football players stand at the bar drinking with their mates, you will see David standing aside with his family. (He's not even in the first team at this stage—you are the famous one.) You, too, are close to your family, and you will think how similar he feels to you. He's going to ask for your number. (He still has the London-to-Manchester plane ticket on which you wrote it.)"
Though she does not remember all the details, the former singer said that it was love at first sight. "I'm quite shy. I just waved from the other side of the bar," said David recalling their first meeting.
Though it was their first official meeting in person, David claimed that he already knew she was the one for him. According to Entertainment Online, David, who saw a Spice Girls video in 1996, said to his teammate Gary Neville, "'That one there, that's the girl I'm going to marry.'"
Soon destiny brought them together. The couple exchanged numbers and finally connected in person only to realize they grew up just 15 minutes from each other and shared similar backgrounds. "For the first three months it was amazing because no one found out about us being together,' said David of their early courtship. "We loved that because we could sneak around. Our first kiss was in the car park of a restaurant. We used to drive to places and just spend as much time together as possible. That was an amazing time in our relationship," said David.
After almost a year of falling in love and dating, David popped the question and the couple became the talk of the town especially by their nickname Posh and Becks. In March 1999, the couple welcomed their first child Brooklyn and went on to tie the knot in July. From then on, the couple has grown together building an empire of their own.
Today, David and Victoria have four children and enjoy a blissful marriage. They are both seen supporting and cheering for each other on various occasions whether it is Victoria's fashion shows or David's football games. It is not uncommon to see a smiling David along with his children proudly occupying the front seats at Victoria's fashion shows.
However, like any other marriage, this one too has had its ups and downs. And the couple has been quite candid about how they worked through the tough times in their marriage. "I think marriage, marriage is always about hard work. You know your children — they want your time and they deserve your time, and difficult situations like traveling away, being away from each other you know, you make it work," said David.
Though they often appear as the perfect couple, the couple has openly admitted about making mistakes in their relationship. "Of course you make mistakes over the years, and we all know marriage is difficult at times. It's about working through it. We stay together because we love each other because we have four amazing children. Do you go through tough times? Of course. That's part of relationships. It's part of marriages. It's part of having children. It's part of having responsibilities," said David.
When asked about the success of their marriage in spite of these tough times, David says it is their strong family unit and shared values that bind them together. "I think because we’re a strong family unit,’ he said. ‘We’ve got strong parents; we were brought up with the right values."
Though the family has a celebrity status, Victoria and David have always been hands-on parents who believe in having a closely-knit family unit. They have often been vocal about how they work together to bring their children up with similar family values. "I have the support of an incredible husband. We really are equal to everything we do at home with the children. When I'm away he's the one doing the school run and doing the cooking," said Victoria to Hello Magazine.
Apart from this, they have also made sure that they bring up their four children in a strict and disciplined manner. "But we are very strict parents. We want to bring them up as closely as possible to how we were brought because you have to give them manners, you have to give them boundaries and our children definitely have that." The couple has often said how proud they are of their children.
Victoria and David Beckham have not shied away from shedding light on the hardships of relationships despite their celebrity status, showing how two people can find happiness in each other if they are willing to make conversations and work things out.
