The couple tried to stay together after the affair but things did not work out between them.
Betrayal can damage any relationship. No matter what you do, it is difficult to mend a broken relationship. Colin Firth's wife Livia Giuggioli said she had an affair with her alleged stalker.
Giuggioli revealed she was in a relationship with journalist Marco Brancaccia between 2015 and 2016 when she separated from Firth briefly, according to Cosmopolitan. Previously, the 48-year-old had accused Brancaccia of stalking her. However, she later admitted that she was just trying to hide her affair from the media.
Soon, she changed her statements and came clean about the affair. “A few years ago Colin and Livia privately made the decision to separate. During that time Livia briefly became involved with former friend Mr. Brancaccia. The Firths have since reunited," said a statement received by People. The statement further stated the journalist harassed her after the incident.
"Subsequently, Mr. Brancaccia carried out a frightening campaign of harassment over several months, much of which is documented. For obvious reasons, the Firths have never had any desire to make this matter public. The reporting this week on this case is understood to be the consequence of a leaked court document. This is greatly to be regretted,” said the statement.
However, the journalist denied he harassed the film producer. Instead, he stated they were "romantically" involved with each other. He even added that Giuggioli was ready to leave the Bridget Jones' Diary actor for him. He also claimed that their marriage had "been over for years."
"She wanted to leave Colin for me,” said Brancaccia, according to People. Speaking of the stalking claims, the man said he only sent three messages to Giuggioli after they quelled their affair.
"My ‘stalking’ consisted of two messages via WhatsApp after she ended our relationship in June 2016, and an email. I wrote an email to Colin about my relationship with Livia, which I now regret sending, and she filed a complaint against me for stalking out of fear that I could go public with what she had revealed to me about her marriage and work," said the journalist.
He added, “In a year she sent me hundreds of messages of love, photos, and videos, even a diary." He also credited Firth as "understanding."
Firth, who came to know the truth, was devastated by the betrayal. Though they tried to work out their marriage, two years later, the couple ended their 22 years of marriage in December 2019. “They maintain a close friendship and remain united in their love for their children,” said the representative of the couple, according to People.
Sources close to the couple said the split came about as a result of the Giuggioli's lies. "Things never really came around for them [after that]. No matter what was decided when they stayed together after her affair, nothing could erase that betrayal. It was time to move on, even though they had a solid family relationship and really wanted to save it," said the source, according to Cosmopolitan.
